Beginners Guide to The Forest.
This is a general tips guide. You do not have to follow this but it may help you along the way.

FIRST OF ALL:

After the crash and scene where you first meet your aggressors you want to grab all the Alcohol and Fizzy drinks laying around also eat all the food available in the plane DO NOT go towards the axe until this is done.

Once you have done this you want to head out of the plane. To the right of the hole is 2 circuit boards hanging off of the plane take them (You can make explosives with them later.) Ive found that the plane crashes in different areas of the map but close by on the beach is a load of suitcases laying all of the floor. Aim down and hit each one to get as many Chocolate bars, pieces of cloth as you can. You can also get flashlights from here. (The Suitcases are always in the same place.) Once you have done that its time to move on.

BEST SOURCE OF FOOD:

Next, facing the sea. You want to head to your right. Follow the coast until you see the big anchor on another beach head. Next to the tent is a WEAK SPEAR this is an important item as it allows you to fish and so far its the only reliable source of cooking in the game. Rabbits and Lizards tend to bug out and not cook. Now catch 3 fish (as this is all you can carry.) From here you can in any direction you like in order to pick your spot to plant your base.

FINDING A GOOD SPOT FOR YOU BASE:

Now from here on out it is your own choice which way you want to go but I will give some tips on where you want to start a base and the best construction parts to use.

1st - You DO NOT want to build your base in an open area away from the trees. It takes a lot of time and energy to move back and forth, grabbing logs, if you put your base in an open area like say the beach and NIGHT is coming....So build in a patch of trees.

2nd - There are a few ponds floating about in the forest which is a source of fish that replenish over time so picking a spot near one of these is great idea. So you dont have to run towards the beach.

Now when you pick your spot first thing you want to do is place the hunting lodge down. (I know you cannot save but this puts the hammer icon on the screen or if completed the home icon) If you want to fan out and search this is a great way to find your way back to your settlement.

WALLS:

Dont bother with the little walls its a waste of time and logs. Go straight for the defensives They take 6 logs a piece and thats only roughly 1.5 trees.

Only put 1 door in the walls as you can fight the mutants at the single door 1 at a time. Also its easier to put your heavy trap base around this door as its the only entrance until the big beasties come later.

Dont go straight for the massive build get a small settlement set up so you can get behind your walls and fight them at the door you put in.

You can place traps around your base but cover the door first.

Once you get these things out of the way your free and safe to do what you please. Build bigger and stronger. Double walls. Trap Funnels. The possibilities are endless and with a good set up from the beggining its easier to get straight into it.

Heres is what my start out fort looked like once I had the walls set:

Hope this helps guys. If you have any questions let me know.

Also here is an alternative guide that has been posted by Accurize2:

I pretty much do the opposite of what was recommended here in my livestream. It worked out pretty well. I grab all the soda and leave the airplane food trays. Eating all the food at the start doesn't gain you anything. My philosophy is I shelter in place using the hull of the tail section as a wall. The first item to craft is a fire pit. I build a fire just out in front of the torn area in the hull.

Then I build normal walls outwards and slowly widening them from the torn section of the tail. The walls continue around the fire with a wall with doorway just past the fire. At this point, I'm pretty well locked in with the fire keeping them from coming through my doorway. I also have some extra emergency food in the plane (just in case).

Next, I build a hunter shelter inside the wall so I can recover and heal. I can use the tail section of the aircraft for elevation to see what is happening over my walls and it gives some cover from the elements should it rain.

Finally, I like to build a cabin with the main door flush to my wall with doorway. I jump in and out through the windows on the sides for access. I can also crawl under the planes tail (where the electronics are found) for an alternate entrance/exit. It makes for a pretty damn secure base.

After all that is done, then I feel comfortable roaming the area.

Here is the final result, just skip to 24 minutes in to see what I described above:

Also at the start its not a good idea to hit mutants until your setup and ready and know what your doing.

how do you cut down trees? silly question, but i cant figure it out

Use the left click with your axe equipped. To equip the axe press "i" and click it on the mat. Then walk over to a tree and start chopping with left click move around the tree to get all of it and it falls.

you can cut them by using the axe/hatchet with left mouse button on them.

ontopic: if you find the camping place there is always a flashlight. much better than the lighter.
Nice tips, did not know that fish were not bugged, thought all cooking foods were, this should help in future, thanks.
Hey OP, I love this game, been waiting for it since I found out about it almost a year ago. I need to know how to tell if they are looking around nearby. I usually dont find out until its too late. I was looking for a guide and found this. Thank you.

No problem. And you will hear a screach when they are close by. Also the mutants with the twin flame torches on the back have a light cone infront of them at night. If you stay out of this you can sneak away. Aslong as your covered in mud and not covered in blood.

The screech will happen first. Then you will hear a ding when they have spotted you. Then just sprint away.
And is it me, or can they easily one shot you sometimes? I find it weird because i slay like 2. Then at full health the third jumps on me and i die instantly...

If your caught by the charge it can one hit you. But if you skin lizards you can use there skin to give you armor. Which will help.
Awesome, also, why should i pick up everything from the plane before collecting the ax?
Sovereign RPG May 30, 2014 @ 7:33pm
The only way to get back on the plane is to build a hunter lodge next to it and climb back on plus once you pick up the axe it spawns a lot of mutants and there coming straight for ya
You can get back on the plane without building the lodge, just go under the floorboard and jump up, you will glitch into the aisle, but the mutants thing is smart. Im gonna write survival tips down for my friends, and I'll show them this post. Thanks man, if I have anymore questions I'll come back to this place.

Btw: Those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ are smarter than i took them for. I was crouched in a bush about 3 feet away from the scout, and he looked in my direction, and swatted the bush away and found me. PROTIP: Run if you see those scouts, dont hide, run.
Sovereign RPG May 30, 2014 @ 7:38pm
LOL yea scouts are not silly. No worries man. Glad I could help.

I dont like to glitch. Thats why I dont use the Flare gun either. Ruins it for me. But thanks :)
