Choosing The Forest after Rust, DAYZ, 7 Days and all the others...
As at today, The Forest is listed 5th on Steam Top Sellers with DAYZ in 2nd and Rust in 7th. I wouldn't say that I abandoned Rust, having first got into that game but I have definitely shifted my hopes and nearly all gameplay into The Forest. For me the game is closest to the survival game concept that I am after; lots of crafting potential, good system, regular and focused development and most importantly the absense of PvP nusiances. It's not perfect in concept for my liking but as close as any other game currently is.

Anyway, this is just a quick bit of chat to find out who else has transitioned away from the plethora of other survival games currently available and are putting their attention on The Forest to be the answer.

Additionally, despite The Forest being the closest match to what I want, I will take a quick moment to talk about what I would like in a game.

What I would really like is something like a Cabelas Big Game Hunter but tied into the survival concept. A game where there were no zombies/cannibals/arsewhole players where you sign on to a server that runs for a limited time - say 1 month. When you sign on to the server you are randomly allocated a small plot of land sufficient to craft and enhance a home. All other land would be common land for unrestricted use by all players on the server. The object of the game would be to fish/hunt/mine/farm with skill upgrades added in line with the resource produced, making you more efficient in that task in addition to the ability to multi-task. You could learn skills such as animal tracking, surface to shaft mining etc. Resources could be sold/traded for money which would allow the ability to learn new crafting skills and further enhance your home and work operation. A store operated by AI could make available more items to purchase depending upon how many of each type of resource has been provided for sale by players, making for a more balanced workforce. It would essentially be a game like what you would imagine of a small frontier town with people living off the land throughout the wilderness in a reasonably realistic (no cannibals/zombies) theme.

Rust is dead to me, long live The Forest! I still play 7D2D every now and then, and a couple other games i bought in the summer sale, but most of my time goes to The Forest now.

DayZ is entertaining from time to time. I think it's fundemental flaw is the engine they chose to build it on.

Standalone itself feels like a mod rather than something designed ontop of a platform capable of preforming what the game wants to do rather than engineering around those existing parameters that lack that sort of flexibility. I hate to say that because lots of great work has gone into it, but, the engine seems to be the biggest thing holding them back.

Another issue is the people. People NEED inscentives to get along.. Without those inscentives we would be clawing each others throats out for our resources because that's much easier than aquiring them ourselves. In DayZ there isn't much inscentive to play together other than having another gun on your side.

And by that I'm not saying "I want Dayz a world where people hold hands in the street in and shoot zombies that bleed rainbows" .. I still want that tension, that fear, of meeting another person or persons and never knowing what they're gonna do.

But.. More ways to work together means more intrigue. Small economies. Faction wars. I've read that there will be a skill system (making it more meaningful when you die) base building, vehicle repair, and other such things that might take communities to accomplish.

After 2 years of dayz (mostly the mods) and severe disapointment in the standalone which IMO is complete GARBAGE and seems to be years away from being playable, I will go as far as saying I have 0 faith in rocket and his crew and just like the original mod the only way dayz will be playable is if the community of modders take dayz away from ♥♥♥♥♥♥ rocket and start modding the game back into greatness. (REALLY rocket 3 years later and we still have the same map??? Really takes you months to come up with new helmets.. YOU SUCK ROCKET.

Ok now that I got that outta my system.. lol I did not like Rust and never really seen the potential, 7D2D is ok and has the potential but seems like its stale now. So its the forest for me, although I have to admit I am starting to look a tad closer at The Dead Lingor now but that again is still very far away.

I love the forest in its unfished glory and there is already a mod that improves on it (see templars mod) The Game is FAR from finished but my hopes are very high with scheduled updates you can see. I also love the community and the passion fans already have for this game. Out of all the alpha type games I play this one has the most potential and I find myself itching to find out more about the story line and the end game. The sky is the limit for this game and I hope the devs do not dissapoint. and even if the devs fall short in the end I am confident that this gamer will have more then a few mods to keep me going as original dayz did.

Thats my 2 cents,

Interestingly enough, Rocket made it clear that the dayz expansion team had come to the conclusion that the engine was a severe limiting factor and they were changing it. I don't think they're going to simply dump the arma 3 engine since it IS good for many things, but the engine is probably whats making things take so long. They're doing the same thing Rust did, going back to the core, fixing shi*, and working their way out again. mods such as Dayz Origins and Epoch demonstrate the potential of dayz. It just needs to be realized. When that'll be *shrug*

After Rust removed the Zombies it lost its edge & fun sadly. 7 Days 2 Die just updated to 8.7 so been playing that again last couple days. I also play Forest with Templars Mod as its more balanced. Never played DayZ, have only watched Robbaz being a pants bandit, or getting cuffed, questioned & killed by fans who think he's an imposter Robbaz, lols.

Thanx for keeping it short..:) Im glad you like it, but Imma need a lot more convincing to pick it up again.. I played vanilla dayz over 2 years, been there done that and SA isn't upto par compared to vanilla mods, so maybe my standards are set to high, Maybe after so long of playing 8-10 hours every day I got burned out. I will toss it in the wait and see catagory..

Never played (or wanted to play) DayZ, especially after squandering money on The Wa...er....Survival Stories: Infestation. I've never really been one for PvP from the start, and the 12yo l337 KoS kiddies completely turned me off of it.

I run a private server for my wife and I for 7DtD...but as has been said, it's a tad stale now seeing as how I can get a base built up fairly quickly and never need to leave and have .03% fear of zeds breaking through my defenses to worry about them. I have encountered the same problem I have in 7DtD in Unturned.

I tried RUST, but the KoS mentality was too prevalent for my taste, as well as the scarcity of food and difficulty of the mobs for starting players. I am keeping an eye on The Stomping Land, though it would seem the devs seem to have all but abandoned the project.

The Forest so far is well on it's way to making it's own niche in the survival horror genre. I have had quite a bit of fun, but I'm waiting for a bit more balance and polish before really dedicating too much more time in it. My hope is if they do add Multiplayer, it will be limited, player run dedicated servers and/or complete lack of PvP....the mobs are tough enough as is.

I wish all the idiots who keep asking for multiplayer would shut the f up and go play Rust.

Almost had a seizure trying to read that blurb....nice story tho...*pops some pills*

The forest feels like it's (on it's way of becoming) the game I wanted Rust to be. Rust just feels too focused on competetive multiplayer, and the community seems full of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ psychopaths who seek relief for their sick cravings in-game.

Then again I suppose it would be the same thing with the Forest if it was multiplayer centric. I guess the crazies are just drawn to games like these.
