I can't find the cockpit ANYWHERE!

I'm not asking for directions, as they would be pointless. The cockpit always spawns in a different location.

But I'd like at least ideas on how to find it - are there certain spawn points? are there islands separated from the mainland? are they typically on the opposite side of the map to the back half?

It is my understanding that the front of plane is bugged since 0.03, you can however find the co-piolot and thus find the flare gun with him. It has always been in same spot, SE part of map.
