What are the patches of rock with the explosive symbol?

I've blown up a couple of rocks with the explosives icon on them...gotten a skull and rope so far...is there any point in seeing what they uncover or is it just trash all the time?

There's a cave under one of them, I recall. Near a river, but that's all I remember. Sorry.

None of the explodeable patches have a cave under them. They are "caches" and can contain (note, *can*, not will) collectible items, such as rocks, skulls, ropes, etc. They are generally not worth the time and resources needed to craft explosives right now, unless you are desperate for something, and have an explosive to waste.
