The houseboat is utterly useless at the moment, so your best bet is to just abandon it. You can't drive the boat, you can't really build on it, you can't expand it, and you can't even tie a raft to it. I love the idea, but I think it's just not fully implemented; hopefully in an update soon they'll flesh it out.

Awww that sucks I spent a while starting to build one as I thought it mite be cool to travel around with. Looks like I'm going to use a raft to explore instead lol

It was mainly for the purpose of surviving the night incase of an attack on the beach, as a quick resort. Also, I found out that it was stuck on a rock and after 15 minutes of moving the boat strategically, finally got it off. Saying that, it's probably 4 miles into the ocean by now.

I have one that is a short ways off of the coast, about 4-5 seconds of actual swimming, its far enough that mutants cant damage it (or me) and you can build a bed and a light in it so its a semi-mobile save point that offers 'some' protection from sharks.

As with rafts, you need to be careful to make sure it doesn't get stuck on anything underwater, you can move it around by walking into the walls while looking different directions, you can even turn it. Its difficult and not very well implemented, but it is possible. I wouldn't want to travel anywhere in it as its very slow however, but for re-positioning its fine.
