Regarding Feathers
Is it just me or are feathers ridiculously hard to get?

I just bought this game yesterday and have been learning about all the buildings and mechanics in veganmode.

When it comes to getting feathers for arrows, I tried:
1. chopping/smacking a bird/seagull with weapons while repeatedly pressing "E". I did this for 2 hours and got myself 3 feathers (didn't even remember how I got those 3). Upon death of the bird, feathers will explode in all directions for about half a second before completely disappearing, leaving no trace or time for me to gather (remember I was tapping "E" the whole time).

2. I tried sneaking up to groups of birds and wait for them to fly off and drop feathers. This method works but I only get 1 feather each time. Took me about half an hour to find 5 feathers.

3. I tried using range weapons. Arrows and spears will have the same effect as melee weapons, they make the feathers explode and disappear into the air in half a second. Tapping "E" collect nothing.

I read many posts regarding feather gathering, I have yet to find anything working. Especially those people who were talking about getting 100+ feathers in one spot (was it on a boat? raft? I can't remember). I tried that, the birds do tend to land in the same areas repeatedly, but the feathers just explode and disappear, leaving me with nothing.

I think there's no bird traps or anything related yet. It is also not possible to "skin" a bird for feathers. I know I can probably just wait around birds on the ground for naturally dropped feathers, but I really don't think spending half an hour for 5 feathers is productive in a cannibals-enable world.

Any help?

Edit: Just to be clear, I tried stepping backward a bit right after a bird "explode" in hope of catching some of the feathers flying outward, but like I mentioned, they just disappear while I furiously tap "E" (and end up with a seagull head in my hand and small generic meats bouncing around me since my inventory is filled with those crap).

When killing a canniball, leave the body in its spot and step back, birds will come and land on the corpse, should help alot with gathering birds. Also, when a bird lands in a spot, just mark tht spot and the birds will land there in a cycle. Just keep an eye out for patterns with the bird movements. If u need any other help u can add me or reply to this.
Hope i helped mate!

When the bird 'explodes' the feathers tend to drift away on the wind, so I find it easiest to do my feather gathering during the day when i have lots of light. They will disappear after about 30-45 seconds but its easiest to gather right after the 'explosion'.

Also you must have the feather targetted so the 'E' is visable, sounds like you maybe arent quite looking at them and hitting E at the right time.

They are a bit of a pain to get but you'll get the knack of it.

I m pretty sure I posted in the OP that my feathers disappear immediately, not after half a minute. They are gone from the world in about a second right after the birds are dead.

And because of that, I can't really target them properly either since they are gone before the "E" action even appear on my screen for the feathers.

Only the ones that spawn from birds naturally stay in the game and float around for a while.

People often exaggerate, if they truly immediately disappear post it in bug section

Yup, it's definitely a bug. The bird along with its feathers disappear after you chop it, though I haven't tried this in SP.

Cool, good to know I wasn't the only one.

I am encountering this in my single player sessions. Haven't had a chance to kill birds in co-op yet.

I will post it in the bug section.

The bug in question makes the feathers disappear when you press E on any part of the bird that isn't feathers. Thus if you just don't spam E when you kill the bird, and instead look upwards and spam E on the feathers when they're in the air and a way from the corpse, you'll find collecting them is much easier.

Just tried that:

1. Didn't spam E when kill bird
2. Look upwards and around
3. No feathers anywhere away from the corpse to spam on. They are all gone in about a second.

..some birds don't give feathers. I'm not sure if that's intended or a bug but that has for me always been the case.

For me 'wack' bird spam 'E' usually works. Not that I'm drowning in feathers but it's just enough after a short while.
I was playing as I wrote that, and I have about 70 feathers so I'm really not sure what's making your feathers disappear instantly as opposed to my feathers that only disappear when I press E on the bird/small generic meat.
Actually, then again, I think the feathers also despawn if the player character runs into them, but I didn't try isolating pressing E or running into them as seperate causes of the disppearing.

So, lets run through it again.

If you find a bird on the ground, (atm birds spawning on corpses seems to be glitched, if you put 3 corpses on top of each other a bird will land on the pile every 5 seconds or so) and position yourself behind it, then kill it with an overhead, do you or do you not see an explosion of 3-4 feathers? (keeping in mind to not be directly 'on top' of the bird, but a bit behind it)

I was able to consistently create feathers from killing birds, and consistently have them disappear when I tried to collect either 1. the small generic bird meat and 2. the head of the bird. If I ignored both bird bits and focused on feathers I was able to collect at least 3/4 of them.

Every bird spawns feathers if you don't hit the small generic meat or the head before you're able to get the feathers, which will always despawn the feathers. At least in my case, I was not able to find a bird that didn't give feathers after 10-15 birds came to visit my corpse pile.

I swear you, I've killed birds and nothing but a dead corps remain, zero.zero feathers, anywhere.
bochocat Mar 26, 2016 @ 7:07am
It seems to be after they added the meat back. I'm only getting maybe one feather per bird.
stopazricky Mar 29, 2016 @ 5:50am
It's simple: gathering the meat or the bird's head makes the feathers despawn. If it happens even when you don't do that, it's definitely very weird
