What should I use to upgrade the modern axe?

I just switched to the modern axe from the katana, like the damage but it's a bit too slow for my preference, and I'm afraid to upgrade the speed since I want to keep its current damage output. People online keep saying 15 glass and 15 feathers and so on but I'm not sure, I don't think I understand the upgrade system well.

Weapon max dmg upgrades without the loss of speed
15 glass (booze) + 15 feathers

Weapon optimal damage & speed upgrade
10 feathers + 10 teeth + 10 glass(booze)

Thanks, I'll look further into it tomorrow.

Just completed most of the caves and got most of the weapons, so I'm gonna start prepping for the endgame.

With how wonky the AI movement is, I didn't use a melee weapon when fighting more than two enemies. My question is, why not use a bow? Safe from damage due to distance, and a headshot is a one-shot kill. Also, (spoiler warning) - the boss has heavy cleave and 360 attacks, making melee that much undesirable.

Probably what I'll end up doing. I got the flare gun which I've heard is really good for the boss.
