Play this before the sequel?
Never played more than a few minutes of this and I'm trying to decide whether I should play the first or just jump into the second. I will say I had a hard time with the second the little bit I did play.

yes and no.

you can just watch an ending video and still see what happens if you don't want to experience it for yourself

Do you think the experience is worth it? Also is the second game incomplete enough to recommend the first?

the second game is inferior in almost every way, it has less than half the content of this game. the only thing better about SOTF is a few QoL improvements, better building and the graphics everything else is a downgrade. The horror aspect for example is much more scary than the second game, as with the map being much more condensed and the caves being interconnected and actually maze-like unlike SOTF where all the caves are just a linear path.

not only that but SOTF is extremely buggy with NPCs getting stuck in the walls/ceilings, not being able to swap items/equipment, getting stuck in animations that force you to restart the game etc. the game is not polished in any sort of way. it feels like an alpha of an alpha.

The forest (first game) is definitely worth playing. It was a great experience. The building system is interesting, and probably one of the most realistic ones in most sandbox survival games (having to carry each log one at a time, and in sleds later on). I like the fact that just about everything I ever built was slightly off kilter, and just a littttttleeeee bit crooked. It looked "real".

And when you start exploring the caves, there are moments that are just pure nightmare fuel.

Haven't even purchased the second one yet. Waiting til later (playing green hell right now, which by the way, borrowed heavily from "the forest", in the inventory and building system).

When SOTF came out i had the same question and decided to play The Forest, never regret about it. It's the best option i guess - after all, second part is not finished game yet, i played for 20 hours and it's early access indeed. On the other hand you have all finished product (first part) with unique atmosphere. Even when they'll release 2nd game it will be another expirience i think. So play The Forest and wait for SOTF release, or at least for a few big updates.

the entire mid and end game is either almost completely missing or feels completely empty. the entire center of the map is unfinished (5 or 6 placeholder cave entrances) and the cave system is currently puny in comparison. i would wait a year at the very least. the sequel also has no boss battle. you can easily see the credits roll in a 6 hour blind run in the sequel so i'd wait unless you want to spoil it for yourself. sons of the forest is half the content spread across a map that's 4 times as large. doesn't even have a log sled yet, tons of basic no brainer things missing and their early access plan is only 5-8 months so hopefully they get their ♥♥♥♥ together.
