If you just plain want to hunt them, bow and arrows are often the easiest method, but if you cant do that yet then the spear or small rocks are your next best option. The small rocks are one of the worst items to aim over longer distances until you make the slingshot, but it can be done (and there is a little circle on the ground to show you where you are aiming, you just might not be able to actually see it at longer distances). With spear, i like to hunt along rivers. Spooked rabbits tend to bunch up near the water and you can sometimes charge through stabbing wildly and get a few when that happens. If you know where it is, the fertile lands are a wonderful place for this, as are the hills across the river closer to main village.
Now I'm getting into rabbit traps, as long as I'm spending time in an area with rabbits, that is.
I can go about other business like building up the base, and passively catch rabbits. By day 2 or 3, I usually had the rabbit leather needed for some of the (imo) important rabbit-based crafting items. Otherwise, if I have to travel a bit to get to the rabbits, then I'll spend 2-3 day time hours hunting them and get the leather that way. An example is that if I'm in the south beach by the yacht, then I run up into the clearing or the small cannibal camp and hunt some rabbits during the day time.
The usefulness of their leather in early crafting items is important like that for the way I like to start out, so they're definitely an early goal.
A bonus side-effect of using rabbit traps is that I sometimes will catch a raccoon at a place I didn't even know raccoons spawn. So thank goodness I don't have to now make a special trip to a certain area of the island to get 1 single raccoon leather.
