Get that rabbit!
Every time I try to hunt rabbits, they are way too fast and avoid my traps. I usually end up catching squirrels or lizards. How do I catch a rabbit?

I've caught some using a spear as I don't have enough for arrows... But I kept missing when I did have them.

you know you can pick them back up right?

arrows? yes

The best way is an arrow, yes. It does take some practice and you need to account for the arch of the arrows path (so aim slightly above depending on distance). Fire Arrows will help you out if you are having trouble at first. Traps are slow and cumbersome. If you can find an area where you see a couple of rabbits on or near a beach, that is helpful because they will spawn near there and it is much easier to see them and get a clear shot (rather than in the tall grass).

I rarely use the traps, they are kind of a pain honestly but some do actually like to catch them and use the rabbit cages to make more (incredibly slowly). If you are determined to use them, place them somewhere you know rabbits already spawn, and find a bush or something on the outer rims of render distance to go crouch in for a while. If undisturbed they naturally just sort of gravitate towards the trap, but they wont even spawn if the player isnt nearby somewhere for the area to be loaded.

If you just plain want to hunt them, bow and arrows are often the easiest method, but if you cant do that yet then the spear or small rocks are your next best option. The small rocks are one of the worst items to aim over longer distances until you make the slingshot, but it can be done (and there is a little circle on the ground to show you where you are aiming, you just might not be able to actually see it at longer distances). With spear, i like to hunt along rivers. Spooked rabbits tend to bunch up near the water and you can sometimes charge through stabbing wildly and get a few when that happens. If you know where it is, the fertile lands are a wonderful place for this, as are the hills across the river closer to main village.

slingshot is the cheapest and quickest way i use to hunt rabbits and lizards

Before I realized the value of the slingshot, I used to shoot them with arrows. Then I practiced with spears. At some point, I realized the slingshot is pretty much awesome for hunting lizards and rabbits.

Now I'm getting into rabbit traps, as long as I'm spending time in an area with rabbits, that is.

I can go about other business like building up the base, and passively catch rabbits. By day 2 or 3, I usually had the rabbit leather needed for some of the (imo) important rabbit-based crafting items. Otherwise, if I have to travel a bit to get to the rabbits, then I'll spend 2-3 day time hours hunting them and get the leather that way. An example is that if I'm in the south beach by the yacht, then I run up into the clearing or the small cannibal camp and hunt some rabbits during the day time.

The usefulness of their leather in early crafting items is important like that for the way I like to start out, so they're definitely an early goal.

A bonus side-effect of using rabbit traps is that I sometimes will catch a raccoon at a place I didn't even know raccoons spawn. So thank goodness I don't have to now make a special trip to a certain area of the island to get 1 single raccoon leather.

I love the rabbit trap, as I can explore as the trap does all the hunting for me... I just wish rabbits were easier to trap.

seems like a skill issue

Make sure you put the trap near where you are seeing the rabbits then leave it, I found as long as I stayed away from it, I'd usually get some.

Slingshot is honestly the best option. Its easy, ammo is easy, and its a oneshot and instantly accessible of the plane.
