Games Similar to and as good as The Forest?
Well, I've about maxxed out all there is to do in The Forest, having spent over 60 hours now on the game, so I'm entering a phase where I'll probably just check in once in a while and add to my base, check out new patches, etc.

I wanted to ask you guys if there are any games similar to this, that have as good or better building features (capacity to build a camp), along with a challenging survival dynamic.

So far, I've found Planet Explorers, and 7 Days to Die -- they both look intriguing, but I've read some mixed reviews, and I'm not quite willing to spend 30 bucks without being sure. Rust looks interesting, but I've heard there is a lot of exploiting and hacking, which is a huge turn off for me.

Would love to hear some recommendations! Thank you in advance.

id looked for the same some days ago, but found nothing like that.
The only very very promising title that could be what you're looking for is H1Z1, which should come soon(tm) to early access (but is free2play at release): MMO crafting zombie survival

I've heard Miasmata is good, haven't played it personally though. Currently have that in my wishlist waiting for a sale :p

Oh God yes Thyriel; if H1Z1 were playable right now, we wouldn't be having this dialog! =D

7 Days To Die is, well... Loosely similar. It has a lot of options for building, co-op, crafting, massive open world with zombies.

See, this is the beauty of asking. I've never even heard of this. It certainly does look intriguing! The only turnoff for me is the average playtime among the steam population. It's pretty low, meaning either the game has an ending that can't be played past (you have to restart), or whatever exists beyond endgame isn't very exciting.

I got kind of excited when I first saw it, but the whole vorxel/minecraft thing isn't wholly appealing to me, because it's too much of a "video game". What I love about The Forest is that building and crafting feel organically woven into the worldframe, which remains otherwise impenetrable and mysterious (you can't dig into it or alter the landscape beyond cutting trees, etc.). What's your take on it, as far as its price tag being worth the value?

I played it for around 30hrs, was great fun building crazy bases, digging and crafting. Sadly my friend stopped playing it, and I've not touched it since. They've changed the 'blocks' now though for smooth terrain. The crafting system is very indepth and there's a lot to do. At night the zombies become faster and more aggressive. They will try to destroy your base.

Yeah! I would have called this thread "Games Similar to and as good as The Forest while waiting on H1Z1" if it wasn't already such a mouthful of words.

Planet Explorers - almost playable, but no first person view by now
7 days to Die - most playable of them all, but for players that played several hundred of hours, too boring. Zombies just disturb gamefun after a while, neverending uppopping hordes, boring. Even random map wouldn´t change this, if you only can build the same things.
Beasts of Prey - same as Forest, play it in a year
Rust - new Version has good chances to become the first real survival game, not monsterslayer-game with crafting abilities
Starforge - forget it
Unturned(free) - Voxel-Monsterslayer game, too "lego"!
Stranded, 2(3 will come in future, all free) - first real, but unprofessional survival game
H1Z1- same as Rust´s old vesrion, same as 7 Day s to die, priority is killing monsters, not survival, will become the next boring, neverending have to kill monsters game, with crafting abilities, means PvP/KoS on MP
LIN Live in Nature(free, private made) - looks good, has to grow

Jerry, let me assess your list and please correct me if I'm wrong.
It sounds like you're saying 7 Days to Die is your #1 on this list - as in the "most playable of them all", and will yield many hours of fun gameplay, but eventually it gets stale because of the overwhelming focus on zombie attacks, and RUST is a close second with where the new version is going? Is that accurate?

Also, I wanted to ask: If Planet Explorers had a first person POV, would it then be the best on the list in your mind, or where would it stack up?

Also, wanted to ask what you meant by "play it in a year", in reference to Beasts of Prey?

By the way -- thanks for taking the time to come up with this list.

I was checking out Beasts of Prey, and found this post from the Dev of the game, directly in the forum. Talk about accessible and caring what the players think, jesus christ this guy is awesome. I am almost willing to buy the game just based on how closely he works with the playerbase. Check it out: http://steamcommunity.com/app/299860/discussions/0/37470848249915142/

Also, in watching the trailer, it looks like the crafting and building is pretty damned great.

(by the way: note the title "developer" next to his name in yellow. That's how you tell the difference between a contracted peon and a real dev.)

forget beasts of prey. Its PvP crafting survival settled in a dinosaur land with ugly graphics, not a sign of some survival solo player feeling

On the other hand, the crafting and building mechanics look pretty sweet, and their Dev is very accessible and directly implements feedback from the community, and I don't mind some pvp thrown in with my survival-time. It's definitely in my top three most intriguing games right now, along with 7 Days to Die and Planet Explorers. Rust would be up there if not for all the complaints about hackers.
