Is 'befriending' natives really possible?
I have read a few things on this, and I try to do what they say but I alwyas end up with my first interactions being with starving canibals, and they never back away and leave no matter how passive I am. Has anyone managed to befirend the native villagers, and if so how? the post a the bottom of this thread

is what gave my friends and I the idea to try it, and we have followed it as best we can but I haven't had any luck. Any suggestions to those who have?

No.

befriending, no... diplomacy, yes... certain enemies will attack for certain reasons, and you can make it so a certain tribe just wont attack you.

well that's what I mean. Having the tribe 'like' you enough to not rush up and kill you come night time. Or potentially be around to 'help' when the more aggressive ones do.

There's no peace you can make.

The best you can do is not attack them, build away from their patrol areas and stay out of the caves. That will make it so you won't have to deal with the above ground tribes If you have a favorite building spot in an area that gets traffic, chop up those starving cannibals and turn them into effigies. Any patrol will either stand back and watch or leave.

If you messed around in the caves and now there's distorted mutants coming after you, get ready to fight or hide because they don't care about your walls or your effigy.

They do however care if you just build in a lake or something, they will harmlessly stand on the shore, or run into the water and be unable to do anything it seems. I sit on my dock in goose lake and nothing has ever even tried to get to me, even the mutant things.

More or less an AI thing I think. I don't think they can walk on player structures yet, so they won't try anything with the dock. They aren't a fan of water anyways, the devs stated. So they won't (they actually can't) swim at you.

Yeah I know, I was just saying you can sort of get peace, not by making friends, but by simply placing yourself somewhere that the cannibals dont care or just cant do anything about. They dont even come to my shores anymore, they just walk on by and leave me be. mutants or cannibals.

"
1) "Feral" Cannibals. These guys often run on all fours and can be pretty aggressive. They are filthy, on the small side and often have a female with them. They seem to show up rapidly out of nowhere even when I take pains to avoid being seen. They love climbing trees, and seem to be as durable as regular cannibals. Can be a problem if caught off-guard.

2) "Tribal" Cannibals. I think these are the "surface cannibals" some people have labelled. They're the ones with weapons and clothing, with some wearing necklaces of CDs and the leaders having heads on poles on their backs. They often investigate, but don't seem to attack unless provoked or until you've destroyed the environment.

3. "Starving" cannibals. At least, I think these guys are the ones known as starving. They are nude, skinny and seem to die in just a few hits. Pretty aggressive.

4. "Prison shower" cannibals. These guys are tall, muscular, completely nude, unarmed and have a strange blue-grey colour. I think the Wiki suggests these guys are scouts, but I never see them alone. They always seem to appear behind me, attack in groups, are aggressive, and seem to have taken advanced boxing classes.

5. And, of course, the mutants. I don't think they count. "

devs havent said anything about special AI's, and whilst i didnt make this reddit thread, i can confirm these actions (with my own experiences). note the "tribals" will only attack if they watch you destroy the forest (AI has to physically watch you cut a tree down). also note that the "prison shower" guys can be deterred if you block/dodge the first attack and hit them once, dont kill them and also dont burn bodies (DONT DO IT(unless you want more of a challenge)).

remember devs dont have to tell us every detail of the AI and they have said in the past that they wanted to greatly improve on their AI (and by far, best AI i have ever seen).

also starving and feral might be the same in this thread, but i will keep it as is.

EDIT: id suggest reading the reddit thread.

mind you its speculation, by a lot of people, and NP

In my experience, I have found that it SEEMS to have more to do with location than your own actions. (Minus environmental damage.. that really seems to fire them up!) If you remove your stumps, however, it seems to cut that down unless they actually see you do it. Some locations I have been basically left alone in and others I have been hammered in. So I'd say location, location, location!
