Let me know if this helps.
After awhile I turned off the cannibals (Veganmode) & concentrated on building a sweet base. Now that I'm fortified they are back on, but with Ironforest so they don't destroy my work. Totally diff mindset having a large camp to run back to be "safe" in. It changes the game completely and I'm not saying you should play like this but it will get you over the fear also. That said I will start again fresh next patch because it totally removed the risk/reward but I had fun building at the time.
After a hospital nightshift maybe all I want is the survival & fun of building a log cabin? Everyone has different play styles.
They should fear you, not the other way round.
It sounds morbid but people even do this in real life when they intend to go on a killing spree because it helps to eliminate all fear (That shooting in Norway years ago is a good example terrible as it was)
Was just like you with being scared of the cannibals and monsters until I started using the cassette player now Im pretty damn fearless in the game and iv lost count of how many of them I have killed and its at the point where I don't need the player anymore. Once you get over the fear and releaise they are just men they loose all power of you and you will become the thing to be feared on the island.
Increase the space between you and your screen. Look away from the screen every so now and then. Don't use headphones, get a cat who likes to lay down next to your monitor like (R.I.P.) Bas my cat.
Basically get some distraction that gets you out the game from time to time.
Jack Septiceye has a couple of them. They are a little old, but once you see others not fearing them, and see tatics on how to combat them, your own fears will subside.
Honestly, you get given an axe the first time you hop out of the plane. Although avoiding the cannibals would be the more sensible idea, just straight up charging them would most likey help you 'get over your fears' as you'll get more familiar with them. Actively avoiding them first time around without having actually fought them will just add a whole lot of tension and fear as you haven't actually prepared yourself to fight them. Just do what moonman said and go get your ass kicked!
There is no "horror" to this game.
It's essentially just a zombie swarm combat game.
