You could say that it's a small coastal area that opens up from inland, surrounded by a tall cliff in the north and a shorter one facing southwards. The "river," where the cockpit is, ends at a small beach where turtles and seagulls occasionally spawn (sustainable source of food).
The sunset it actually quite beautiful when looking at the ocean, and the water can act as an emergency getaway if you get surrounded. If you look at the EXACT COORDINATES on the map, you'll find two or three trees below the southern cliff area. I made a treehouse base in the tree closest to the shore, while using the other two trees to farm sap. I then surrounded my treehouse with happy birthday traps so that cannibals cannot climb up into it.
If you're ambitious enough, you can create a perimeter around your base to hold off mutants, but it's optional.
If you're not the type to build treehouses, you can use the open area where the southern cliff is (below the coordinates) to establish a perimeter.
The area has plenty of trees in the west, and is actually fairly close to the cannibal village (though they rarely ever decide scout nearby). Thus, you can quite easily sneak in and loot supplies whenever needed. In the area above the northern cliff, there is a large open field where deer spawn, with a few ponds nearby.
