Hole cutter was interesting...
glad I saved the game before trying it, thought i would just get a nice hole to come up through the stairs since flooring seems wonky.
Is there a way to fix pos on the pre built structure so you can walk around and see if its position is actually going to make sense?

Building in the Forest is very challenging and punishing, requiring attention and precision. Thus, if you are building something more comlplicated than a shed - save game a lot. Before and after. In different slots. This is how you check if you done things right. You can't fix/improve most of the things here if you've made a mistake - you need to raze it.

Important tip - blueprint mode allows you to place most of the structures almost anyhow you want. Thus, try to set all blueprints you need, before you start actual building. Especially if you are building in tight space.
dont even know what blueprint mode is, kindof like the specific issue, some things are only challenging because the effects were not clearly explained.

"Ghost" version of the unfinished building.

Lots of things here require proper angle, build order, accuracy, positioning. I invested a lot of time into Forest and still discover nuances in building.

The good news is that the building is helpful, not required. You can beat the game with no structures at all, or make yourself a McMansion on your new vacation island. When you first pick a blueprint from your book and are trying to place it in the world, that's blueprint mode, and when you can adjust the position of it. Once you have placed it down you can check around to make sure its as close to correct as possible but if you feel you need to readjust you usually have to cancel the existing ghost and try to replace it. Even then some structures like the stairs especially and the floors sometimes will also complete looking far less level than they did in the blueprint (like it may have looked fine while it was still a ghost but once you put that last log in, your stairs suddenly look drunk).

Hole cutter is dangerous but useful, it essentially deletes whatever is inside it's little box which is about the only way to do stuff like get rid of log sleds you dont want anymore but it can also cause your entire house to crumble into nothing if you accidentally hit the wrong spot with it to. If using it, save first, always. (also worth mentioning BEFORE it happens, the crane is also prone to deleting anything in it's way when the blueprint is placed so it can take a massive chunk out of buildings even worse than the hole cuter sometimes. Always save before messing with the crane to)

The fun way to learn building in my opinion is to check the peer to peer servers for server names like "Build and chill" or "just building" for example. Usually you can bump into people who find building to be the best part of the game and who will happily show other players how to enjoy it as well, while also still having the fun of playing normally and making potential new friends. At least that's been more engaging and educational for me than watching youtube videos. Everyone's a bit different.
Edit: bonus points to learning directly from other players, it's far easier to ask clarifying questions if something doesn't quite make sense to you as well.
