My first encounter with the worm...
Last time I played the forest I am not sure this thing was in game and I just had my first encounter with this thing and I have to say this is the only time in game I actually ended up freaking out. I was out hunting boar for a warm suit when all of a sudden I hear this slapping sound off to my side and see what I can only describe as an avalanche of flesh coming down the hillside right at me. After first contact every direction I look there are writhing tubes of flesh that don't seem to end as I swing my katana at the largest mass I can find. Luckily I was wearing full bone armor and had plenty of cloth so I was able to replace what I was losing from the worms. Eventually, they started to thin and I emerged victorious but that is the only time this game managed to frighten me and in an entirely different way from how everything else is supposed to be scary.

Oh my, I can only imagine! I am not looking forward to seeing that thing, Armsy and Virginia are bad enough.

it does not show up until after day 40 according to the wiki.

It was one of the last things added to the game, so it is totally possible it didn't exist the last time you played if you were an early access player. Even if it was in game, it's a rare spawn that doesn't even begin to try and spawn until day 40 (well, unless you manage to do the alternate ending before day 40, in which case you can get a variant of it earlier than that). It's a pain to deal with once the initial shock wears off, but it is one of few things that also causes genuine panic in players that got used to how the game normally plays so i guess it does exactly what it was meant to.

That said, that thing has caused me so much grief. Had one game where I was basing on that safe cliffside beach near main village and a single sausage fell off the cliff during a fight. It took me like a half hour to figure out why this thing refused to die all because of that one sausage stuck in the ocean that just kept making more problems until I finally managed to snipe it with a bow.

yeah I got lucky I was away from my base at the time (I base myself on the island near the shipping containers but I know this thing can fly but idk if it will try to make it to one of the small islands) and it only really tried to use its body slam attack. The first encounter with it is just such a wtf is even happening moment.

It will totally go to the outer islands. That is part of what it exists for. It was basically the solution to the player complaint that there isn't much of a challenge late game once you have your base set up, especially if you set it up in a place thats generally inaccessible to enemies. Hence flying base buster thats immune to drowning. Admittedly its a solution even the devs weren't entirely sure about. They admitted the team was 50/50 on it but opted to keep it in because of the sheer amount of work they had already put into it.

damn lucky I was nowhere near it at the time. If I was not finished with the game (got basically everything and story finished at day 60) I would move my rabbits and storage into the caves to protect them.

turning build destruction off basically neuters it, but build destruction off can also be a bit too easy since your structures are now invulnerable so you never really have to worry about any of the enemies no matter where you live (worm can still attack you inside structures, but wont explode them like they are made of wet toilet paper at least).

I've never seen one above ground legitimately myself (even past 100 days) without someone spawning it in via console/mods. But I rarely ever cut any trees and simply build small camps directly in the entrances of caves throughout the map (drying racks/water collectors/save point...skull lamps and maybe even a fire pit sometimes makes it nice and homey too, whatever floats your boat).

I think I'm in the minority, but i like flying leaches. I call her Sara. Love it when she molests me hehe. Might not make sense for the game story...but the very fact that it's so different and can destroy everything is what i like.

First time for me i was in my base on a walkway and it came for me from a cliff. Scared me half to death didnt understand what it was. After that once it started to attack every half an hour i simply looked for some way to delete the worm from the game forever. Turns out the worm is just annoying and ruins the game for me utterly. Every half an hour and then armsy and megan and virginia all gets too much. I even had armsy jump up into my tree house.

I still think this is the funniest worm vid out there - the other guy's voice, not the one making the vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr9VI5djKdY

lol I was in the same position. I wasn't aware this was added either as it attacked me while hunting. My first impression was similar to that guy in the video but after seeing how that thing was clearing the forest of trees stump and all, I was pretty livid. I'm really religious about my trees because that's what makes the forest so beautiful.

With this new found knowledge of what I call the meat tornado i decided to build on the water. There I was sitting in my big house nice and safe watching the sharks swim under me as I noticed the meat tornado heading in my direction. I was surprised to see that the water wasn't stopping it and in panic I jumped on a raft and started to escape. That thing chased me in the water from the yacht all the way to the cargo containers lol, good times.

it will not go to all islands. that is false. in order for it to come out to an island or offshore base the worm needs LINE OF SIGHT to you. if your base is far enough off the shore (doesnt need to be super far either) even the worm wont come for your base. farket has made a test on this long ago and its still accurate in the final patch version now.

the big island for example near fertile lands : worm CAN see you from shore. thus will come for you and attack you over there.

small island in the bay where the yacht is : worm WILL NOT come for you as this island is just far enough away from the shoreline that enemies cannot spot you on it. the worm cannot see farther than all other enemies. thus youre safe there includeing whatever you build on there.

basically : if you see enemies running along the shoreline but they dont stop to look at you standing there : youre too far away and thus they wont aggro on you. this includes the worm.

the line of sight thing is cruicial. for example the worm wont come for you if you are INSIDE the yacht. but if youre on the deck of the yacht enemies CAN see you from the nearby shore and in that case : worm comes for you.

thus its pretty easy to make sure your base is safe from it. well unless you LURE IT OVER THERE from the shore. then it really can follow you everywhere. but thats on yourself then as you could have avoided bringing it to your base in the first place.

building destruction OFF is a cheat for a reason. would only ever enable that if youre going online for random multiplayer with a finished base world. otherwise trolls can destroy your base. cannot fix or prevent human stupidity afterall. but for enemies its a cheat no matter what.

I know this is false because I've seen it myself. My base was right next to the yacht when it attacked me.

Edit: Granted my base was a little closer to the shore but not much, I could jump on the yacht from my base.
