Do spawned in effigies mean a bad place to base?
I decided to build my base on a large cleared cliff area. Near the end there were two effigies already there. I ignored the effigies and I just destroyed them for their sticks. On night 3 when I decide to stay there (built a hunting shelter). There were 3 groups of cannibals that spawned and I managed to kill off and sleep. On night 4, there was constant back to back cannibal groups of 3-4. Everytime I killed one group, another spawned pretty much on top of me. Enough that it became impossible to beat without dieing. When I got back, there were two effigies spawned back again.

If it matters, the cliff is somewhat close to the plane crash.

Destroyed the effigies a third time, they respawned when I went to sleep. Is this the cannibal's form of a death threat? They can't kill me (not without losing tons of their own) so they leave effigies?

Effigies respawn over time, and they generally mark areas prone to cannibalism. Best to just avoid building there, unless you want to just kill off all of them in that area and incorporate the effigies into your "decor".

How would I go about killing them all off in the area? I'm partially settled in and if it's possible to remove the cannibals completely that'd be great.

Just keep killing them as you see them, and they eventually run out. Cannibals stay dead for good, so the whole island can eventually become devoid of enemies if you keep at it long enough.

So I just rig up my base as a fortress?
I have a couple questions then
1. How durable are the defensive walls?
2. How do defensive spikes work? As in, are cannibals smart enough to not run at them, or do the spikes kill/damage them for trying?
3. Do you have any tips I could use for cannibal-proofing my home?

Use rock walls (3-4 rows high) instead of wooden walls. Put first rock wall row blueprint down but don't finish building the wall yet. Surround it first completely with partially placed in the rock wall, happy birthday trap blueprints (so you can rearm them from the inside).

This way (surrounding your rock walls with happy b traps) cannibals can not reach your walls and climb up. Is also good deterrent for most mutants.

At least that's my experience.

Not true. Cannibals are not a 'stock' the island keeps. Take it from somebody who makes it thier goal to get as many cannibal attacks as possible. I've gone through thousands in my games with ease and never run out.

The only way to stop cannibals permanently is to use veganmode. You can reduce thier spawns depending on where you build and sleeping every night at dusk. Lighting fires will almost always cause cannibals to appear so best bet there is to make a bonfire and keep it constantly burning.

In regards to the totems, the cannibals will spawn to patrol and sometimes will pray at them. They will plant them outside your base eventually but you can easily destroy them for good. There are a number of spots across the map though where they spawn by default and will respawn constantly. If you wish to avoid cannibals then best build away from those ones.

I thought it was such a good spot too. Surrounding cliffside with only 1 (albiet large) entrance.
I honestly expected cannibals to eventually come to attack my base, I just didn't expect a constant stream.

Should I just follow the coast up until I find a better place?

I know the Effigies you are referring to. To the best of my knowledge if you build something where they spawn, they wont respawn.

Define "something". I tried building a custom floor on top and it didn't work.

Is it possible for our own traps to get us? Or will I be safe if I trap up the entrance.

Pretty sure enemies on the overland never run out as has been suggested here. In caves they do die for good.

Look on the wikipedia for effigies, different effigies mean different things.
