Best place to build base
In my opinion, the best place to build is right at the anchor area on the beach.

The reason why is for virtually every reason you could think of. It is right beside a cave on the water for quick exploration. You have easy access to a spear and fishing for food. There's a cliff and downhill area at the edge of the beach, making it easy to toss and roll lumber toward your base without having to make a bunch of long trips, there's plenty of items lining the beach such as coins and drinks, and the beach itself offers an open area with a good view. half the time the tribals don't even come close.

As soon as you build a secure base there, virtually every threat becomes trivial after the first night. The only way you can die from then on is in caves or being careless and falling off a cliff.

The worst place to build a base, would be in the tribals huts, but it is a quick base....one door at the opening is all you need to secure it. from there you can build a shelter, someplace to cook, etc.

It makes them easier to kill though, since they'll still try to attack you through the walls of the hut, you can just slash at them or if you build a fire outside of the hut and then stand on the top of the hut, they will just run into the fire. But building there means you're going to be seeing angry tribals almost all the time. Great base if you're in a pinch at night or need easy parts for effigies.

I have built my fort there.
BUT
Once the deep dwellers start coming out, bad idea. To close to cave.
At this point the location of the Native village is not a worry, but as things develop I dont think living where you can see their houses from is such a hot idea..
For now, its home though.. :D

I set up my initial base just south of the beach where the sailboat use to be. A small area below a cliff with water on either side. I was getting so bored I went out to stir up trouble with the natives. They would chase me to the cliff, I'd jump down, they would stare at me then run off. I posted a screenshot of "home". Right now I am building a cabin on the beach near where you find the modern axe. I got into some scraps but after putting up a few effigies, I haven't seen anyone for a few game days. Will be interesting to see what kind of changes that will be made with the new update.

Good ideas, all. I humbly submit that the best initial placing is with your back to a cliff & in the thick of the wood. Near the rear of the plane is a good start, since its not very close to a cave. If you start with a cabin and create a small enclosure the 2nd day & grow outward after that, nearly any location with those criteria will do.

It's hard to find a cliff that you can build on, especially since many rocks that extend off cliffs can't be built on, leaving the sides of a base open, or requiring quite a few walls.

technically the best place is anywhere if you can build just 2 walls and a door in a triangle pattern. that's basically as small as it gets when it comes to safe quick shelters.

you can get away with 1 wall and 1 door if you build against something like the bottom of a cliff or rock face, but I wouldn't trust it since that gives a path for mutants to potentially drop in on you, because many rock faces have areas capable of being walked up and down.

Yup. Like that place to build.

I've seen mutants jump over standard walls, but haven't noticed whether they can jump high enough to clear defensive walls. Does anyone know? But as Jeorg mentioned, once the big guys come out of the caves, all bets are off as to locale, other than you'll need a good food source and logs after Armsy leaves. It'll be a whole new ballgame.

I've done this myself and I thought it worked out OK...hoping for a bit more action since mutants spawn there. But after doing so, I also built an effigy (for light) and as one poster also mentioned, they seems to stop respawning. Has anyone noticed that? Just curious cuz even if it's so, I'm sure it's a glitch that'll be rectified anyhow.

My fav spot for the moment is just west and south of you Core...placing my cabin in front of the small pond in the woods. Lots of fish, lizards & rabbits there and have at times, enclosed the pond. But again, after Spidey & Armsy come out, I doubt I'll be there.

I've build my base on the cliff behind their holy tree. Started realy good but after a while its a long way to get wood and because its their holy tree they keep coming back and also seem to spawn in my camp..

hehe, the first time I moved my camp to look for a new home, I went there.. looked so good to live at, and easy to defend since it up on the ridge.. yeah... nope. They were there all the time, and none to happy to see me...

the beach is a nice place, but by far not the best ;)

There's around half a dozend better places, most not easy to find.
One is from that "main beach" to the left. If you follow the cliffs up there is a small hidden beach somewhen coming with only a very small path leading down. Easy to defend and quite some place to build there.
If you go further left then you will come to the "edge" where the "river" gets to the ocean again. There is a small path there that ends in front of a stone wall. Thats another place with only one small access. And it's very hidden too. If you don't lead them there, they rarely find you at all.

I prefer the "main" beach, where all the suitcases spawn, its large, lotsa trees just up the incline, and regular cannible patrols to build alot of effigies with their body parts :D and of course all the suit cases to loot when i need supplies! I always start with a hunting shelter and defensive walls all around it, and I always end up with a huge fort, check my screen shots on cloud to see what i mean!

I built a cabin up at that holy tree cliff, and it took me nearly 4 days of non stop carrying back and forth without rest. It took me 1 day to cut down all the tree's, then I began to haul them. This actually seems to keep the mutants away as they were more focused on checking out the logs laying around, and didn't really cross past the logs. They actually didn't start coming out to where I could see them until after I finished building the cabin.

To build a cabin up there what you do is the first day, cut down all the wood you'll need. then you take the farthest logs first, slowly working your way to the closest ones. this ensures that if enemies do show up, you will probably be able to avoid them or at least further away.

I have a cabin, a fire pit, a stocked stick and log holder up there. but that's it for now. I haven't decided on how to build a wall since there's many areas where it can be circumvented on the side rocks and I don't want it to be all shoddy looking or block any views.

I'm thinking of just building a wall down the whole beach line to seal off that area and carve out a small country ;)

I also have quite a few custom traps planned. there's one I call the gauntlet, which is basically a narrow hallway made out of defensive walls, lined with fire pits.

I'm also thinking of building some kind of roach motel so I can trap some of the cannibals and keep them as cattle muahaha. what you would do is build a closed off area with defensive walls, with one side lined with hunting shelters for ramps. get the mutants to come at you to where they'll run up the ramp and over into the pit, where they can't get out. I want to fill it up to where they're soo dense they're shoulder to shoulder in there.

you could also do this with perimeter walls by building 2 layers of walls, and lining the whole outside with hunting shelter ramps.

"as cattle" I did something of the same type, what I did was build a defensive wall "cube" with one wall all but comple cept for one log of the last wall, had a log bin right next to the opening, got a couple in following me, ran out grabbed the last log then sealed it up, lol was funny the were stuck in it for awhile, the female some how jumped out, then the guy cannible just stopped moving, I went away from it for a bit to cook a fish, came back and he was gone. Was fun while it lasted! hehe

imagine, all our plans, our knowledge, soon to be made moot.
When Octopus and Spider come,, then it will be a new era..
and our walls will tumble down..

Its about time for them to start in on us, yes?
