also, you are correct about the sharks. The living ones dont even drop the head trophy, so the only point to killing a shark is getting the achievement or buying a few minutes to swim in shark waters for something like collecting oysters, but it sounds like you got enough food to not bother with that already.
If it's smaller than a deer you could always practice your marksmanship. Rabbit, lizard, raccoon, and boar can all be 1-shot by bow and arrow. Deer can be 1-shot by a thrown spear but will happily run off with your arrow if you try to shoot them. Though deer also get a bit stunlocked when they are hit regardless what they get hit with so its also fully possible to just run up and smack them and just keep smacking them til they die. Croc, is big enough to sort of get treated like an enemy, shoot it repeatedly from afar or beat it up with melee but watch its bite, including its ability to lunge towards its backside if you try to strike it from behind. If all else fails, turtles spawn at various points across the coast, drop 2 generic meat, and all you have to do is aim for the neck not the shell. There's also fish in the various ponds, lakes, rivers, etc that you can easily get to.
