Finding caves
So I know to progress the story / find better items I have to find caves. Does anyone have any tips for finding the entrances? I know theres an interactive map, but I would rather not use it. Thanks!

There's some things that can help, though almost all of them require that you end up stumbling close by the entrance either way so ultimately it comes down to exploring. Squeeze entrances will often make bat sounds as you approach. Climb entrances often (but not always) have a sort of rock hood over them that kind of looks out of place (easiest example of this one is hanging cave climb entrance. hanging cave is the cave that the cannibals drag you to the first time you "die" in single player and the climb entrance is right there so its often the first example a newer player will see of this kind of rock hood). Hanging cave also contains a map in that same chamber you wake up in, and that map fills out as you explore so it can sometimes mark a cave entrance you overlooked as you went by. Your to-do list also tends to help. If you get close enough you will often get a "explore X cave" prompt on your to-do list. Some caves will also be marked with nearby totems/effigies from the cannibals. Though cannibals have several things marked, so effigies don't always mean there's a cave either.

If you want a bit more help, like a general area you might want to look, I can get more specific, but it seems you would prefer to try this mostly blind for now.

Thanks! Im yet to die (came close many times) so the getting dragged into a cave is new information for me. Hopefully you just made it easier for me to find caves :steamhappy:

If you want to find hanging cave without the delight of dying, that one I can help a bit with. That one is a climb entrance in what many players refer to as "main village" as it's the largest cannibal village you end up stumbling across. (well, debatably, one of the northern ones is pretty big to, but doesn't have a lot there while main village has tons of goodies). So if you end up finding a big village with a whole lot of goodies to pick up, and a cave entrance you are in the right spot.

Is it the village on top of the hill, overlooking the lake / river down below? If so I've seen that village before and will go back and look for a cave entrance!

There's only really one hut overlooking water at the main village, a cliffside one overlooking ocean that's a bit separate from the others. The rest is in a somewhat wooded area though it is on a hill. The easiest way to find it without a map or being familiar with the landmarks is probably to start over by the yacht/sailboat since that's one of the most easily recognizable landmarks for a newer player. If you are starting from yacht/sailboat you could either follow the cliffside by boat or on land, but either way you'd be going to your left if you are standing on the beach looking at the boat. If going by land, that cliffside hut is the landmark you'd be looking for before you follow a little dirt path inland to the rest of the village. If going by boat then you'd be looking for a cliffside beach instead that comes up a bit before the cliffside hut. You could safely park the raft at that beach and parkour your way up the cliff, and take a right when the terrain opens up again.

Here, a visual might help to. I was actually taking a picture of the aloe patch that grows nearby the main village for another question someone had, but that is main village in the background of the shot though it is from a more inland perspective than the mentioned cliffside hut:
