That said, I personally don't mod but there are some mods I'm aware of being fairly popular. Champions of the Forest for example, alters the game into a more diablo-esque rpg style game with loot drops, variable enemy health and abilities, a levelling system, and magic. Admittedly haven't seen many playing that mod lately though, so I'm not sure if it's outdated by now or not.
I think those people are spoiled by modern games always giving us a map, whether we need it or not. This is one of a few games I've played recently that doesn't have a map, and I actually really appreciate it. You have to navigate for yourself.
This is a survival gae, where you're supposed to feel overwhelmed and doomed. A digital map isn't in keeping with that idea. If you introduced a paper map that doesn't have a flashing yellow "you are here" mark on it, that would make sense. Helps you navigate, but doesn't ruin the game's atmosphere.
The game does have a paper map that you can find, a map that fills in as you explore. I grew up on older games, the kind that were intentionally hard to pad the gametime since they could only fit MBs on the cartridge. I'll admit, a lot is handed to modern gamers, but I also don't mind. The point of games is enjoyment. You enjoy yourself one way, others enjoy other things. If they want a mod to better enjoy their game, let em. The only mod here that I specifically dislike is the grief mod, and even that can have positive uses it's just most often used to troll.
Totally agree. I've just noticed recently how people seem to be spoiled by automation. Like people are forgetting how to do things like navigate because we've become so dependent upon Google to do it for us.
And I'm not just being an old fart saying "kids these days." I do it too. When I was 20, I drove somewhere twice and then I would never get lost on the way there. Now (at 38), I'm so dependent on GMaps that I'm a month into my new job and only today was able to get halfway there before realizing I had forgot to start the navigator.
So I love a game without a map. And I get that not everybody agrees. But it's like music. How do you have the equalizer set in your car? Mine's flat, because I want to hear the music as it was intended. I want to hear what the artists and the producer(s) wanted to get across. Art is what you make of it, but it's also what the artist wants it to be. I like both.
I play Skyrim both with and without mods, because I want to like the game (and therefore play with mods), but I also want to have an unbiased view of what it actually IS, rather than what it COULD HAVE BEEN.
I'm only 30 but we apparently share similar tastes and experiences lol. My sense of direction used to be literally competitive, one of the best on the orienteering team (basically the sport of compass and map navigation). Nowadays, still have a decent sense of direction but I'm 6 months into a new city and only know about a 5 block radius from the house without a GPS. Took me quite a while the learn the map in this game, and the in game map is admittedly not the most useful for that either. I found theforestmap far more helpful personally. It's not a mod, but it can be useful to them since it also includes coords.
