Ultimately weve explored a bunch of caves near our base and I'm trying to figure out what to do next. If i'm meant to explore until i find something notable im happy to do so, but i dont want to have missed some obvious waypoint or mechanic
There is a couple of tutorial videos on You Tube
As for direction. The caves are numbered, but that doesn't mean that is their order. In game they instead use the cave name rather than number anyway. Some caves however, will require that you already found certain items in other caves in order to fully explore them. The last cave, requires several of these items, making it the last cave that is restricted to the player by progression. It is also where the end-game is, so any additional information would include spoilers.
As for finding caves in general, the map can help you in identifying where you have been and marking entrances even if you overlooked them. Most cave entrances are somewhat obvious, they will often be marked by totems and some will have a bat screech sound when you approach them as a sound cue as well. There is a wiki if you truly can't find them, it tends to spoil what items can be found within but it doesn't always get specific enough to find them easily.
If you want some direction in at least finding the map:
The most obvious and easiest entrance to the chamber with the map in multiplayer is within the cannibal's main village. It is the largest village and fairly central to many points of interest.
If that doesn't make anything stand out in memory, then most players learn the yacht beach pretty early (the bay with the sailboat). If standing on that beach facing the sailboat you would see a large hill to the right with a lone tree on it. Follow the beach away from there, to the left instead towards the other large glowing tree. Continue following the coastline as best you can until you come across a hut near the cliffside containing several ropes, an outfit, and some gas cans iirc. Follow the path from that hut into the main village. The cave entrance would be behind the huts on the opposite side of the circle around the tree. It's a climb entrance with a rock hood that makes it pretty easy to spot.
You also have a to-do list. This list will indicate you what caves you need to explore, and it will tell you once your business is done in that cave. If the cave is still not marked as completed, then you might have missed something on that particular one.
The to-do list will not tell you on which order to explore the caves. You might find you need a partcular item in order to advance in some. If that's the case, you need to find another.
Now, some cave entrances can be actually hard to spot/you could miss them completely. So you can look for it on yourube in case it becomes too difficult. Entrances are marked on your map, but even then it can not be so obvious.
In - game the caves have names like "hanged man cave" or so. But on most places you'll find them numbered.
