Lizard armor is also very weak, but incredibly easy to obtain. Even on hard survival when lizards aren't spawning as much, hunt some crocodiles and boom, you've got 4 armor right there because you poked a big toothy lizard enough times.
Bone armor...well...it's a great armor but you get it by killing cannibals and burning the bodies, so you do have to risk your armor to make more. If you get hit a lot when doing that then yeah, you will lose armor faster than you get more. Generally you can reduce how often you are hit when fighting by strafing. The cannibal attacks are often quite linear so you can avoid being hit by simply sidestepping them.
Creepy armor, you need to kill the creepies/mutants to get the bubblegum armor but it is the best armor you can get. I usually save the creepy for when I'm doing the ending, or if I end up stockpiling it.
Basing, may not be my strongest discussion point, I normally live nomadic. I play p2p a lot and those don't tend to last long, so I don't often invest that time in building something I'll likely never see again. That sort of disclaimer said, base defenses are mostly to defend the base, not so much you. They can help you, and in some cases also hurt you...a lot...and many fights end up coming down to you running outside to go defend your walls, or taking potshots over those walls to defend them. Means that when I do base I usually don't invest a whole bunch into walls/defenses, although I do love the happy birthday traps acting as secondary walls once triggered.
