I set up two happy bday traps near the big anchor, get bow in hand, and can continually have cannies coming from both the West (big tree in the woods direction or the beach) and coming down from the big tree on the bluff - edge of the bay.
Once they've found you, the AI doesn't forget.
Have they built their effigies around your base area?
EDIT: If you want an area that is supposed to be rather 'quiet', peeps have mentioned an area dubbed 'the fertile plains'. If you search that in this forum, or google it, there are maps showing the area on the peninsula.
The so called fertile lands suck. I would not suggest building there unless you want to be super bored lol. Also will need zip lines crossing the river in order to build anything of notable size. I guess its good if you want to build a pretty big base thats fairly safe from enemies. Im not the type of player who sets up camp where everyone else does. I prefer random spots that i pick out for diff reasons.
The best way is to encase your base in a big wall. The walls must be far from your base but still within render range. If done correctly you will have no attacks at all except for the odd ball mutant who will destroy anything in their path in order to keep going. The only way you will be attacked is if you get to close to the outer walls and a cannibal senses/spots you.
Ive done that a few times and it always worked just fine. It can be rather tricky to find the max allowable range though. This will also put limits on the size of your base. If anything goes out of render range the patrols will just walk straight through.

As you can see, I ran a zipline from the high bluff by the big tree to the island, and in turn, built a high platform on the island with a zipline back to the shore landing just East of the big anchor. Now, I play with friends so I made the big raft that takes two to operate correctly, stuck as many log holders on it as we could, and got logs over to it. Slower than land based, but was actually pretty good fun. Never bothered trying to send logs down the zipline because I read they can glitch at the end and fly all over the place.
Some peeps have stated they've (always) had cannies/mutants spawn on the islands. I had never seen this until the last update personally, BUT since then I've had one cowman and one armsie show up. That's over the course of in-games days (like 30-40) so it doesn't appear to be a frequent occurrence. I can assure you on normal mode that you certainly aren't going to be constantly hassled, and every blue moon you might have a visitor to keep things interesting.
Also, the new end game 'Worm' mutant can find you, but I don't believe there's anywhere on the map it can't!!
Anyway, it was funny as h*ll because there is a shark somewhere in that area a little ways from shore, and it was hilarious listening to him scream. He managed to get far enough away from it, miraculously, and we had our zipline :)
The one back to shore we used a raft.... for obvious reasons.
You've got your friend, so you guys will be able to handle it, no probs
EDIT: Adding a pic of the Chalet interior. Lots of room on the island, and it also has the new shipwreck on it.

But i still think there are way to many enemies in the ps4 version... 3 virginias a day is kindda to much...
Only 3? I can't even count how many cannibals I see in a single day and I easily see at least a dozen mutants. I seriously can't even stop to build anywhere other than an island. It's kinda stupid. (PS4)
