Basically, as stated by others, color grading. I generally prefer Texas myself for both days and nights, though I used to go with something like Epic for the days and Texas for nights. When cave diving, I'd suggest not getting any brighter than whatever you prefer as your default for a first time exploration (first playthrough) but if you're an experienced player and just prefer to punch through to the more interesting aspects of play, go with 'M131,' which is option 13 in color grading if 'Original' is option 1.
The use of the upgraded stick as a torch is thoroughly ruined currently, as it (logically) blinds you more than it illuminates. The lighter is actually very useful though as you get more batteries, equipping the flashlight to everything from the bows to the chainsaw makes sense.
