Then use a different color grading.

Or the Cave and Night brightness slider under 'Display' options

Even with the options at max it's still pretty dark lol, but I feel like it adds to the experience. You can use mods most likely to alter the brightness further.

Yea just set cave & night contrast to max and set color grading to super, then turn up your display brightness. It should be enough to get by, just not as effectively as during the day. Your vision will be better than the mutants' and that's pretty much all that matters.

Use a flashlight, apply cloth to a weapon and set it on fire, or/and use a color grading. For your base, you could use different structures to provide light.

I really like the darkness, though sometimes it does get REALLY annoying. So usually I mess with the color grading when I feel I need to.

I'm pretty sure there's a general agreement that since the full release the darkness has become a bit more than oppressive and gotten ridiculous ('Bird Box' challenge in the forest requires no blindfolds, yay!)

Basically, as stated by others, color grading. I generally prefer Texas myself for both days and nights, though I used to go with something like Epic for the days and Texas for nights. When cave diving, I'd suggest not getting any brighter than whatever you prefer as your default for a first time exploration (first playthrough) but if you're an experienced player and just prefer to punch through to the more interesting aspects of play, go with 'M131,' which is option 13 in color grading if 'Original' is option 1.

The use of the upgraded stick as a torch is thoroughly ruined currently, as it (logically) blinds you more than it illuminates. The lighter is actually very useful though as you get more batteries, equipping the flashlight to everything from the bows to the chainsaw makes sense.

With the eye adjustment thing on, the torch literally makes everything around you DARKER, but it works better when you change it.
