How to use console commands?

So I'm honestly confused. I get that there's several things you can type in during the menu screen to alter the game, but a lot of the other console commands on the wiki depend on typing something else into the main menu. I've tried typing "developermodeon" muliple times but it just doesn't seem to work.

Is the info on the wiki outdated or am I just an idiot who can't figure out how to do this?

Just type developermodeon into the title screen. Without quotes. There's no confirmation or anything. Then hit F1 or F2 to see if it works. F1 should bring up the prompt you type commands into, F2 should bring up some infos on screen. There's nothing more to it really. Ingame you gotta press F1 to type your commands

See this is my problem. I keep typing in that command as soon as the "new game whatever" screen comes up, but nothing ever happens after that. I don't get another screen after typing it in and starting a new game

Honestly, maybe I'm just stupid and I'm missing something really easy here. I've even looked up guides for this. Supposedly I just need to type in "developermodeon" and then I can press f1 and do whatever the hell with console commands.

I straight up can't. I keep trying, and typing that in does nothing.

So if you start the game there's this first screen wich says the forest, single player, multiplayer, options, exit to windows right? You gotta type it into there, not the next one wich says new game, continue, back. It's working! I just started the game and tested

oooooooooooooohhhhh, okay. I got it now. I kept trying to confirm that the command was turned on in the menu screen. I guess I really was stupid. Thanks for your help.
