The gist of it is: jump off a ledge and once you begin to 'fly' let off S and W and glide down. You want the glider to be about level to the ground to float down, dont pull up too much or you'll lose speed(remember, it's a glider, so it doesn't propel itself), and holding W will nosedive down.
Thanks to Redd.
You need to make sure your head is perfectly level before you jump off a cliff/tower/whatever, then don't touch the mouse until you stop flying. The reason for this is because if you are accidentally looking up too much or down too much, then you'll think the nose of the glider is either too high or too low when it's not; your head tilt is just throwing it off. Then my advice is just to sprint/run towards the edge, jump at the last second and let go of W and then just tap W once until to bring the head of the glider to the top of your screen. This puts you in the perfect position to fly for quite a long time. I only ever use S to make slight adjustments like if I'm diving and then trying to level out. You won't ever be able to gain altitude above your take-off point so you can't think of S as a way to gain height.
If they keep the glider in Sons of The Forest, I hope they add updrafts. That would be awesome :)
