Mic not working for me or my mate

Both of us have the same issue where nobody can hear us, we can't hear each other either. We are pressing Q however the mic is just not working in this game. Any suggestions as to what we are doing wrong?

Is your microphone set to the right input in your steam settings? And are your microphone settings in the gameplay tab of the options menu turned down?

It works in steam for the both of us, and in other games that use steam. The mic slider is set to 50 for the both of us.

my settings are correct but no sound from the game comes through my headset. it auto switches to my screen speakers

I realize this is an old thread but this is the one that shows up every time I've googled this question so I'm leaving my answer here in case everyone else is directed here like I was. I have found that both the audio input and output defaults need to be set in windows settings (I'm in windows 10) in order for voice chat to work in-game. I had to do this regardless of whether or not I could get voice in the steam chat.
