Discovering crafting recipes

Is there some way to discover crafting recipes other than just guessing? Are there clues in the world, or some logic as to what you should combine? Or is it assumed you are supposed to look everything up online?

Just put something on the crafting mat, e.g. a stick, and move your mouse over the cog wheel. It'll show you all the recepies wich contain a stick in this example. Including the needed items. It's much easier than it was before. Back then it was more try and error. I really like the new mechanic

Oh I see. That doesn't seem to work in VR.

However, it seems that all the crafting recipes are revealed that way and are not supposed to be discovered through exploration/experimentation. So I'll just look everything up online.

Reviving this thread because of google - if you look directly ahead in VR (not towards the mat) there is a floating gear icon that appears when something is on the crafting mat, you have to point at it with your pointing hand to see the recipes. Took me forever to figure this out
