Brightness settings do nothing?
After dying in a cave because my lighter flickers every 2 seconds and I haven't found any other light source or anything yet I went to increase brightness in my display and nothing. I now have day night and contrast maxed and even restarted the game and it looks exactly the same.

What's the deal?

Switch your color grading to "Texas" in your graphic options in-game.

Still can't see anything. Pitch black, it's like playing Doom 3.

Same here.

I set my monitor to max brightness, then went into nvidia setting and maxed all brightness too. Desktop was so washed out looking. Went back into game and same thing. What light there was was super white but darkness was impossible to see through. I think it's hardcoded to be a pain in the ass.

You're trying to brighten light that doesn't exist. There is no ambient light like in other games, so increasing brightness will only increase areas that are actually illuminated. If you want to see in the dark (and you shouldn't if you want the full experience - it's intended that you can't see but a few feet in caves absent the flashlight) use shaders instead. There are a number that make it possible to see in the dark.

If the lighter isn't good enough and you don't have a flashlight, then make a torch with a stick and some cloth.

Usually I wouldn't mess the darkness but this just isn't fun and further more is illogical. Why Can I not put a burning stick in my left hand? Why can I not pick up the mining helmets with attached lights? Why can't I hold a flare in my left hand?

Dying because my lighter blinks out AGAIN followed by tch tch tch tch tch tch before it relits while I get hit by spastic cannibals and weird floppy sudden jumping babies isn't fun.

Well, you can either use a torch, or turn a weapon into a torch. As long as you don't swing too many times it will burn for a long time. You can turn 2 or more weapons into torches, and in the middle of combat if one goes out, switch to the other.

There are plenty of weapons that have a high block rating, so you can hotkey the second weapon, and when the first's flame goes out switch, hold block, back into a corner, and light it. Easy to light a new torch in the middle of combat without taking damage. Just takes a bit of practice.

You may hate the darkness mechanic, but it's kind of crucial to the experience. If caves were brightly lit, there wouldn't be much tension.

I can see just fine using epic during day and blockbuster at night. Usually epic for caves or super @ times.
I did max cave/night brightness, wasnt much a change but helped. I wouldnt want more.
I left daytime brightness where it was.
I max contrast and it made everything more flush with color. Green is more green etc.

I tend to feel that at this time, there is no longer an option for using the same Color Grading through Day, Night, and Caves. Previously I could do Epic under any and all circumstances, but I think they've broken some things past the fixing point. I'm not 100% on that, as I'm not really all that far into a new game, but overall I feel the same as when I'd drop the grass density for hunting rabbits: like I'm using the settings to cheat. But when the darkness is so bad that I might as well be completely blind, I'm not left with many other options.

Hey EndNight, want to create a hotkey for changing the color grading?

I cmpletely agree. And that's a mess as far as I am concerned.

A few things that are annoying to me regarding light.

-Having to change from my torch everytime I want to open a suitcase as to not waste its fire. Why can't I just hit it with the butt like it does when not lit.

-Not being able to change batteries in the flashlight without disassembling if it is attached to weapon.

-Not being able to turn off flashlight if it is attached to weapon.

color grading M131 is working fine for me in the cave, while normal mode was unplayable.
