sling some "defensive wall" across a decently level area, don't make it too short or it won't work, then hit "R" on it

In addition, I think it has to be 4 or 5 logs wide for a single gate. It's about a full section (once the check mark comes up) for a double gate. Designating gates next to each other combines them into a double door.

Note that single gates hinge from the side you started placing blueprints from. Meaning, if you pull the wall left to right, the hinge is on the left. Both versions swing outward from the slanted support log (the diagonal brace, one for single, two for double). Meaning if you want the gate to swing outward, place the diagonal inside.

Also note that many items can be altered in their blueprint forms, such as many storage structures into larger versions.
