In-game Map too simplistic
I appreciate the addition of an in-game map, but it is missing a ton. At a bare minimum, it should clearly mark cave entrances, in addition to cannibal villages. I would also like it to mark the locations of plants and animals. Once discovered, it's reasonable that the character would take note of such things.

Otherwise, give us the ability to annotate the map and leave notes for ourselves.

As it stands now I'm forced to rely on https://theforestmap.com/ , which, although very detailed, is basically cheating and breaks immersion.

You can build markers.
Even though I don't know if they plan to advance the system by not only changing the color of a marker but also the type (cave, point of interest, gun part, ...) and always give us the chance to turn off some markers.
Since the icons can get very annoying, when all you can see is markers. XD

However, I've seen that my chap drew some sort of tents onto the map.
Guess those were cannibal villages?

Caves are also shown on the map. Also, the playable world is so small, you wouldn't even need a map at all imo. Just set a marker if you stumble over something interesting.

Ah yes I see those, but they don't show up on your map. If they want us to actually use the compass and map, the map need improving.

Small tip, those cave looking thingies that are in circles are rock entrances to caves while those holes with arrow going into them are rope entrances to caves.

As guy said earlier ^
tents = villages

Ahhh yeah that was not clear. those looked like houses. Because the map is imprecise your red pin is never exactly where you are.

Still, some way to indicate plant and animal locations would be very helpful. Or to mark points of interest (yacht, containers, cockpit) on the map itself.

actually, the map is precise, i use it all the time with my compass, and its not off by a single degree.

although, it could use some upgrades

And, it doesn't fit the entire in game arena, lol

IMHO - Online maps like the one on the Wiki are great... when you are not playing. But trying to find a simple map to print is impossible. Nothing out there is worth the ink and every one I have found is dark.
I am not looking for a full-detail, printable map - even a simple one would be nice. I will add what I need. I just want the opportunity to do with it what I want - and reprint it whenever.
Would love an idea

Being able to make marks on the map would be fun and kind of useful, but the thing is that after, say maybe a total of 50-ish hours in-game you'll most likely be able to navigate the map without any external assistance.

The map is not super large, and you can always easily use the mountains to find North, as they are visible basically anywhere.

Markings would only serve a purpose of immersion in the end.

Yeah I know more or less where the major terrain features are. My main problem is remembering where each cave entrance is, where it leads to, and where specific plants and animals spawn. Also, for RP purposes it would be cool to label little scenes we stumble across (like an empty campsite), or to be able to label different camps if you're the type that likes to build multiple bases.

It wouldn't help you much to mark specific plants. Although plant spawns in general are static, what plants actually spawn there changes each time you load the game. You could find marigold in a spot one time, then it will be aloe another.

Why is it cheating and breaking immersion?
You simply have to open up Steam Overlay and go to that site.

It's completely independent from the game and is a good way to orientate yourself.

Nothing bad about that. I still use it after over 120 hrs ingame.

The overworld map is actually useful once you figure it out showing you exactly where all main cave entraces are, rope entrances, and villages. However a good chunk of the NE of the island isn't even on it so that sucks. Ironically I find the cave map itself to be an almost unreadable mess. Which may be intentional I dunno.

To be fair, the map is pretty small and the fact that you can use in game markers for homes and just markers in general is already a lot. Not to mention, theforestmap.com is a very comprehensive map that you can open in your steam browser.
