Characters in CO-OP

When first starting the game, is there a character selection or is it random? In single player, I assume that you play the dad, but if you are in multiplayer, do you get to choose who you want to play? I watched The Forest series from a year ago, and the selection seems random. You can die as one character then come back as another.

It is always random.

So there's only three (minus the main character)
They are all male - caucasian, african american, and latino
I think it said that they will have different clothes tho? I would like a lady character eventually

Clothes can be found in the world since 1.0. About female characters there is a big thread that has turned into a big mess so pls dont necro it.
