Dedicated Server Performance (2018)
I see a couple of posts regarding this, however they seem to be referring to an older build.

I am running a dedicated server in a server cluster that has more than enough resources to run 100s of dedicated servers, yet when i run The Forest, the game is really laggy. Birds hover and warp, deer run in place...etc. This happens both with internet connected clients and local network connected clients.

The VM is indicating that it is running at about 40% CPU and 15% RAM usage. There does not seem to be any disk r/w going on.

The servers I am running for other games are not having any issues in this server environment.

I see there are a ton of dedicated servers out there.. is anyone else having this issue?

I have none yet, but I might get one since this could be pretty entertaining.
Already rent a server for Ark a few years ago and recently (even though I stopped hosting again, since of still being under development).
So I am not totally unexpierenced about. But I still cannot help you with your issue, as different games, different issues.

However, when V1.0 arrives I may give a dedicated server with Forest a try.

There are also some interesting points for dedicated servers in the developer plans for V1.0:
https://theforest.gamepedia.com/V1.0#Developers_Plans_for_Release
  • Big performance optimizations especially for late game saves. This is to allow the game to run more smoothly with bigger player builds.
  • Changes and improvements to how multiplayer save games work and along with this a bunch of dedicated server improvements.

It may be possible that everything has to be rebuilt, when the full release is out.
Since savegames may get incompatible with previous builts.
Was stated that the full release is this year at the end of April.

The setup for multiplayer (and specifically dedicated servers) was extremely rushed and unfinished; just to shut up people whining; but the issue is that the dedicated servers are vastly under-optimized and are set up to do things the completely inefficient way

So you are saying they all suck and there is nothing that can be done?

I know some people who are more skilled than me who have gotten it working pretty well

Basically he is saying that this game was concipated for singleplayer only.
The developers just have listened to the community and implemented multiplayer quickly.

Something what didn't happen for Subnautica for example. Even though Subnautica is also very awesome it could have been way more fun if you were able to play with someone else to minimize the resource grind.
