Bought it last weekend have 50 hrs now on record. XD
My potato has some serious hardware running, so I have no problems regarding performance even on highest settings.
There is even an ending, but I didn't even entered the sinkhole yet as of liking to build bases and raid regular caves before entering the one which leads there.
Yet, that's my experience.
All I can do is hoping you may enjoy it either in the same manner. :)
Started singleplayer, played for a while to get a bit of a knowledge of how things work.
Switched to multiplayer and newer touched my singleplayer game again.
Even though it's easier in multiplayer (building quicker as more people help, reviving knocked out team mates, more battle strength, ...) it's very entertaining if you have some pals on your side.
Just be sure to host privately, as my first public game got infested by a cheater that used a trainer for being immortal and build building instantly without needing resources.
His justifcation was "I am helping", which was stupid as without any challenge a game is worthless.
So be sure to play with people you know are playing legit.
If you get annoyed that your base is destroyed, you can even turn off base damage and force trees you chopped of to regrow after a while.
These are two ingame settings the host can check under "Options" > "Gameplay".
They are considered as the only two legit "helper" settings.
Yeah, compared to Ark it's much, much better in that case (Ark €60, The forest €15).
Even if Ark is out of early access, it still feels like it is in early access.
Constant updates and they even seem to take over mod content into the base game, as far as I am aware about (Structures Plus mod will be included).
Right now, The Forest provides everything what a full game needs, even if V1.0 is still pending.
The ending and whole story provides some intense moments too.
For a good game it's bargain.
7DtD offers more in every other aspect. Balance. Replayability. Challenge. Objectives. Custom difficulty options. Base siege mechanics. Enemy variety. Anit-cheat. Modability. You name the lacking feature from the forest, 7DtD likely has it.
This game is releasing from EA in April too even though the feature list is extremely lacking. 7DtD is not releasing until it's actually ready.
The Forest is a decent effort, I can't say it's not worth checking out. But the development path steers it miles away from the success of 7DtD and you can see that if you just look at the steam player charts for each game.
Buy it as another game. But don't buy it with the intention of replacing 7DtD with something better.
A must buy if you like survival horror-esque games. It's very immersive and you will jump in your chair - I love it!
I also highly reccommend "The Long Dark" - it is a great survival/exploration game and frankly, the best damn survival game I have ever played.
Also one big warning; don't try to throw stones at rabbits and pick up the rabbit without first unequipping the stones. Otherwise your game can completely freeze up and you may lose a fair bit of progress. A long time, well known bug that has never been solved.

Seconded, Subnautica is a billion times better. SO much more polish and thought put into the game, and it is far nicer looking and with much better building options too. Just compare the raft house in this game to the Cyclops submarine/mobile base in Subnautica, that's a pretty good analogy for the two games.
If i'm correct the forest is the debut release (first public game) of the devs while subnautica devs at least published around at least 2-3 games before
