Crafted Club vs Modern axe.

The modern axe seems better stat wise but that initial slow hit is so crappy and clunky, the weapon shows its strength only after you land that initial messy hit, which makes it so bad against the fast canibals you get in caves and patrols.
And these are the canibals you will likely get into melee with, the rest i can easily headshot anytime.
On the other hand the crafted club has a very smooth opener, a little clunkier hit continuation due to slower nature of the weapon but easily manageable, AND full block that can save your butt hard if you get locked by a hard hitting mutant or a group of cannibals.
I want to use the modern axe but my melee combat ability felt much more potent with the club.
Any tips on the axe that can perhaps help or aspects i can improve? (both weapons are fully upgraded in speed and damage)
Playing on hard diff, around 40 hours total game playtime.

I use modern axe all the time, 19 glass 11 teeth upgrade. You just need practice, dunno how else to help you. I move arround alot to avoid their attacks and wait for opportunity to strike so I rarely use block. Wait for jump attack and lock them with combo. With high strength you need 3 hits for skinnies do fall down.

Modern axe is slow, but if you're gonna use the club you had better use the cannibal club and not the crafted one, which is statistically worse.

If you're going for speed you should use the katana anyway

And the best weapon is the modern bow

Pretty sure the crafted club does the most damage with upgrades. Strong attacks will do insane damage. Pretty sure farket has a video on this as well. It is the slowest weapon in the game though i think. So if your timing sucks then dont use it.

If you want to play the game cheap then just throw spears everywhere. Pretty much like cheating lol.

I was looking for the same answer to this question and found it in one of Farket's video's. The reason the Crafted Club is preferred to the Cannibal Club is it costs less stam to swing and you can basically max out damage and end up with the lowest speed with either.

Modern axe is slow but methodical. Like others have said, you have to practice your timing, and in my opinion your positioning as well. I personally prefer katana, which has almost no ability to block, so my habit or just not getting hit also plays into modern axe when I use it, all due to positioning. They generally have very linear attacks, so once you see them prepping you can inch/walk to the side and avoid it entirely even if you spent all your stamina.

Be aware modern axe does have animations that prevent or slow your movement during them, and time your attacks accordingly. Usually that means waiting for an opening and locking one to death, sometimes you can just strong attack one pressed against a rock or something and still avoid getting smacked by his buddies.

Power attacks are bugged on axes and cap out at 20 damage. Use crafted club if you use power attacks. If you don't, use modern axe for its faster and longer ranged hits. I think axes knock down enemies more too.
