Like dutch mentioned, playing with friends or on multiplayer in general also helps. Not only can you watch each other's back and have some strength in numbers but in multiplayer you don't actually die for good like you can in single player, instead you go down for a set time period in which other players can pick you up and if no one gets to you in time you respawn at the plane again and can go retrieve your backpack to get all your items back. It's makes dying in general less stressful and less likely while you get the hang of it. The biggest penalty for death in multiplayer is that your stats reset on respawn, but since your stats already climb rather slowly it usually isn't a major loss anyway.
you have 1 bonus "live"
you die -> cannibals carry you to treasure cave (map, compass, lots of food, very close to lots of dynamite etc) -> you are free to move away with all the goodies (there are like 3-5 cannibals in cave which tend to be asleep... just stealth kill them it's 1 hit kill when they sleep, they don't respawn)
and if you save + load you get the "live" back and you are free to die again
if you die twice in the same sessions (die, don't save+load and die again) then it's game over.
multiplayer dying is worse because not everything drops into the backpack and once you recover it you lose some stuff, especially the story stuff
My Friend and I play most nights, completed the game both ways loads of time, we have fun and build loads go down the caves, but look after each other, feel free to send me a friends request and join us if you want too, we use the rift and chat using the rift home if that helps.
(next to nick there should be "mouse" icon if you own the game)
the refund sounds has higher chance to be a thing there
the refund had higher chance to happen than family sharing (because you ignored thread) that's why I have said that you have probably refunded already
