Hows the crafting and base building?
I've 600 hours in 7 days to die, and my fav part is the crafting and base building....above ground, underground, no limits what can be achieved and hundreds of recipes etc.

How does The Forest compare?

The Forest isn't sandbox, so you can't dig or mine. When it comes to crafting there isn't a crafting menu, but inventory where you have to pick items and put together to see what they craft. The basebuilding you pick blueprints from a book rotate and set the white blueprint where you want it then you add the items to the blueprint to finish it like wood logs, leaves, sticks and rocks. I would lookup gameplay on YouTube or watch some gameplay on Twitch.

I absolutly love building in this game. You have to be creative to make things look nice. The biggest issue with base building so far is the lack of things to build, functional or otherwise. Large houses may feel quite empty, but so far we're getting a slow but steady accumulation of useful furniture/structures to build.

Nice! That doesn't look half bad at all :)

I also play both 7 days to die and forest so perhaps I can offer a helpful comparison. 7 days to die does have more freedom of creation in both building and crafting, but admittedly it makes sense that it does. 7 days to die takes place in a countryside complete with cities to loot so of course there are more resources and capability than one would have surviving on an island where the only inhabitants are still at a tribal stage of development. While the crafting and building systems are less extensive than those found in 7 days to die they are still more than adequate for the setting provided in the forest and they don't feel excessively limited or hindering. The crafting system itself can be slightly confusing, though you stated you have over 600 hours in 7 days to die so I imagine you have played it for a while, if that's true then the forest's crafting system is a bit more comparable to the older crafting menu of 7 days to die, before everything was neatly listed by recipe. You can find most crafting recipes in your survival guide in the forest, but some are excluded (usually specialty items or recently added items they simply haven't updated the book to include yet). There isn't really much in the way of building progression like there is in 7 days to die, you don't really have to find special items or books to be able to build a proper base, you just need the components, which could be seen as good or bad. Good in the sense that you can freely build whatever you like from the start pretty much, but bad in the sense that there isnt that same sense of accomplishment in building that you'd get from "YES! i can finally make cement!" in 7 days to die. There is also no mining in the forest, so underground basing is entirely different. You can't traditionally base inside of a cave, but you can set up a basic camp with things such as a bed, drying rack, and fire...otherwise underground basing is nearly non-existant in the forest, and cave basing is the closest you can really get to having an underground bunker. The structural integrity issue found is 7 days to die is also seemingly non-existant, you dont build your base block by block but you can build it in sections for a more customized build. While the building system naturally encourages building in ways that would be structurally sound, it is also fairly simple to defy physics and your house still won't crash down on top of you for it, though cannibals and mutants can still destroy your buildings just like the zombies in 7 days to die, and you do need to maintain your base and traps in the same manner (repairs always take sap rather than a building specific material such as the scrap iron, concrete mix, or steel needed to upgrade and repair in 7 days to die. Resetting traps will always take a stick instead). other than that the other major difference is that the building and crafting menus are more seperated in the forest. In 7 days to die you have to craft each block in your inventory and then place it, upgrading as needed to fill it in after it is placed. In the forest you access your inventory and crafting menu using I (by default) and it is used to craft smaller objects such as tools, weapons, or materials...yet the building menu can be found in your survival guide, brought up by the B button, and this places a "ghost" of your build in the world that you must fill in all required materials for before it becomes a tangible build. I have played the Forest rather extensively so if you do have other questions about it you can feel free to message me if you'd like.

TL;DR-The 7 days to die building and crafting systems are more extensive and better polished overall but the Forest is still a fun game with a lot of potential for a player who favors the building aspect of a game.
