Yes, traps can trap lizards, but you can't pick them up. You have to kill them while they're in the trap.
Not nessacarily true. You can kill the lizard while it's still in the trap but this damages or even destroys it.
You can however, time it correctly. Open the trap (Reset it) and stab with a weapon like an upgraded spear as soon as it moves or more preferably if you're confident of your aim, a small distance away from the trap,
I say that is more of a preferred method because if the lizard is killed to close or under the trap that just been opened (resetted) and you go to harvest that now dead lizard. You will trigger the trap, causing it to fall onto the lizard corpse and it vanish. This means you only get the skin and no meat.
Yeah if you want to chase one with the Benny Hill theme playing.
But yes, you can have rabbit farm for a near constant supply of meat.
I mainly have animal traps just to start off the breeding process but then keep them for the lizards so I have a steady supply of skin. I'm not near the north so alligators are out of the question. This is just my personal experience.
Is that 100% of the time? I could have sworn I did try various weapons and the spear was one that did damage. I will most certainly try again though so thank you.
I've got round to playing The Forest again and re-done some tests. Observations to follow. Thank you for mentioning the spear as your response is definitely correct and helpful.
In short, you can use stick, upgraded stick, weak spear, upgraded spear and even the bow to 1 hit lizards / rabbits in a trap. However you must note that you need to aim on the sides and to aim low enough. This is because if you aim to high then it counts as hitting the trap itself.
I would also advise in skinning the animal BEFORE resetting / opening the trap. Otherwise the corpse (The meat) would vanish if you were to trigger the trap and it fall onto it during the skinning animation.
Extra Info:
I also tried every weapon just in case a player would miss / forget something.
I also tested what would happen if you accidentally damaged the trap before killing the animal and then repaired it, the result was the animal inside would escape - most likely due to the shape and placement changing of damged / repaired items.
Now in regards to using the different weapons that had a downward swing and not a jab like those mentioned in the first paragraph. These were the results.
The Plain axe, Climbing Axe and the Machete destroys the animal trap in 3 hits. (Machete may look like two but on the swings I took the first was hitting twice.)
The Modern Axe, Crafted Axe, Crafted Club, Club and the Katana all destroyed the trap in 2 hits.
So if for some reason you don't have the repair tool and damage your trap in the process of killing the animal. The trap would most likely survive being hit at least once.
Now in response to Yolo Swaginson just saying "Dude, it's an easy repair". Yes that is true, but you can't just assume that every player would have the repair tool.
So should they need to replace traps and are not in an area where sticks are plenty or have the Machete all ready. This could become quite a tedious task considering the Rabbit Trap (31 Sticks) is the 3rd most expensive item in the game and is only bested by the Large Raft (32 sticks) and the Armor Rack (37 Sticks).
I hope people found this information useful.
