The spear: easily the best hunting weapon

think about it you don't need any ammo for it and after learning how to use it properly you can hunt just about anything within range with a few shots or stabs the bow in contrast does need ammo it's a bit unwieldy, and the ammo is a bit of a challenge to gather

For ammo to bow... Just kill 1-2 birds and pick up 1 stick :D
About spear -> you can't use it more than once on long-range, you will need to run and pick up it.

(btw comparing close-range weapon to long-range sounds strange)

Honestly I prefer the bow for hunting and spears for combat, but I do use spears for hunting every now and then

like i said if you figure the weapon out it's very flexible since it's easy to make more you can throw them grab two sticks make another and promptly plant it in a deer's brain case again and rinse and repeat

Still you can have 1 weak spear and craft 10 more if you have stick bag :D

For me, the spear works pretty well for bigger animals, like deer, lizard, boar.
I miss the rabbit too often, so i frantically run behind it until i finally can stab it :D

But yes, the apear is a pretty good weapon for me as well for hunting.
Though, the bow works fine for me, too.
You just need to get the hang of it for both of them.

For hunting purposes the weak spear and upgraded spear are both 1 hit kills for pretty much everything when thrown (haven't tested on the buffed crocs tho).

What I usually do is equip the weak spear, then the upgraded spear. When you throw the upgraded spear it automatically swaps to the weak spear afterwards. So on the odd occasion where you do miss, you've got a backup shot without needing to craft anything.

Though stones are the best hunting weapon for smaller animals because you get an aiming reticle making it impossible to miss and it kills them in 1 hit.

I find it way easier to aim with the bow, especially small animals like rabbits. Don't want to boast but i'd say i hit 9 out of 10 shots so i usualy don't lose the arrows.

yeah thats still arrows i'd have to replace and for me finding arrows is a pain and sure you can poison 'em then light em up but at the end of the day two sticks five hard to get feathers

The thrown upgraded spear is the highest damage output for a single strike in the game short of explosives.
