The Forest redefined the Survival Horror genre...

by making a game that truly deserves the title "Survival Horror", where the core concept really is a pure survival setting, adding horror elements that fits into this setting.

Seriously, when I think about Survival Horror, I think about Resident Evil, Silent Hill and such because it always had this label. But it's not in these games that you will have to thrive for your basic needs. The survival aspects of these games are simply about healing yourself when hurt from enemies. And items management.

I've been a fan of Resident Evil since 2002 and at the time, I was dreaming about an open world Resident Evil game where you could scavenge a whole city. I thought that it would be the logical futur of the franchise. Unfortunately, I couldn't have been more wrong. Outbreak gave us some hope but Capcom went astray into action instead of survival. Which I always thought was a shame.

The Forest brought me a feeling that I never had before but always dreamt of while playing a survival game or an horror game or both. Neither Resident Evil, nor Silent Hill, Outlast, Amnesia, DayZ, Nether, etc. brought me this.

The only other game that I can think of that would really deserve the title of Survival Horror would be Don't Starve, which is awesome, for the same reasons as The Forest. The thing is that Don't Starve doesn't bring you a First Person perspective where you get paranoid about Cannibals at night in the dark woods.

I think I could say that The Forest is the best Survival Horror game I've ever played.
Let's just hope that the devs will add the stuff needed to make it even more interesting.

Still, even in Early Access since years, with its flaws and some stuff lacking, I'd still recommend it as one of the best, if not the best, Survival Horror experience.

Even though I can't run VR myself, this game would obviously be a must being fully immersed on the Island. I almost crap myself thinking about it. Just imagine.

Anyway, that's pretty much what I had to say at the moment.

I agree completely I have over 200 hours on this game and I never felt this way about a game for the peak of me playing. It brought me through sad times and happy times and I know I will always come back to it. Each update resembles the care and effort that the devs put into to making this the game of our dreams. I still watch Broadbent every day with his new forest vid and I never get sick of it.

Amazing game loved it or should I say love it as I will come back to it.

I think the sound work in this game is top notch. It keeps you tense. When you walking you might hear a snap or a giggle, at night you hear unsettling cries. The cannibals often don't even straight up attack you, but instead glare at you and stalk you. Its the only game of this genre to legitmately unsettle me. I remember the first time I really encountered the cannibals I was just chopping down a tree and I looked behind me to see 5 cannibals just staring me down.

I'd agree when this game has the possibility of actually killing you through enemies and hunger or thirst. Until then i'm not trying to survive at all, im thriving. I just run at swarms of enemies slashing them all up like like a hero from lord of the rings, leaving nothing to really feel horror about because there's nothing to be afraid of apart from losing some armor.

The sounds are good though, I'll give it that. But it's more like an action game with a free banquet to me after learning the ins and outs.

The sound work is good but I have a strange bug in coop sometimes where the audio sounds too far away or in the wrong place (to far to the side or behind). It's a really good game though.
