Does it matter where you place the feathers/teeth on a weapon?

No I don't think it matters all that much except for accessory. The feathers speed up the weapon and the teeth deal more damage. In this case it is quantity over placement.

Thanks! I read on the wiki that if you add teeth, it slows the weapon down, but adds damage, and if you add feathers, then it'll make the weapon faster, at the expense of the damage. Is this true, or just outdated info?

Yes that is true. Putting glass shards on a weapon are stronger than teeth but will make the weapon even slower. Feathers will increase speed but lose damage.

When you put a weapon, booze, and tree sap on the crafting mat it lets you put the broken glass shards onto the weapon. The glass shards do a lot of damage but slow the weapon down much more than teeth.

It's true, but what they fail to take into account is knockdown mechanics and stamina usage.

When you use teeth or glass, it may look like you will attack at the same DPS due to the reduced speed, BUT take into account that you will consume less stamina to deal that increased amount of damage. So that results in you being able to deal more damage than normal before you run out of stamina, resulting in an increase to overall DPS when you expend your whole stamina bar. This is better for combatting mutants, although the upgraded spear, machete or katana will be a lot more effective damage wise and none of these can be upgraded with teeth/glass. So teeth/glass are kind of pointless.

Kockdowns generally occur within 3 consecutive hits on normal or 6 on hard. When an enemy is knocked down you can instakill them by hitting them while they are down. When it comes to feathers, you will deal less damage but your faster speed will result in faster knockdowns and faster instakills. This is the best way to deal with cannibals as knockdowns and instakills will occur faster than killing them with raw damage will almost every single time.

In the end, in terms of melee you're best using the plane axe with feathers wrapped in cloth and set alight when it comes to cannibals. Ignore every higher tier axe in combat against cannibals because they don't have the speed of the plane axe. Against mutants you're best using the upgraded spear until you find the katana/machete. As mutants cannot be knocked down the faster speed of weapons is not of help.
