enemy AI is really good.
Every great once in awhile they will run in place, stuck in front of a wall or something ...

but, overall, this is some of the best AI I"ve seen in a game.

They dont do the same things all the time. Their actions and reactions and sounds etc are quite varied and complex. And all their move-sets are smooth and real looking. And I feel as if they are using real teamwork against me.

This is better than most AAA titles. Good job.

I love that the tribals don't even attack you every time they see you.
They're watching you and sometimes they are hitting you once or twice just to test your reaction.

Exactly. You dont know what to expect from them. They might kind of follow you from a distance. Or run off to get more help. Or like you said, sort of test you. It's amazing AI.

There's times where I purposely get hit by an overzealous tribal, back off, and then they just stare for a while before darting off.

Mind you I don't know if that's just the AI going off to get more tribals but it feels like they just go "eh he doesn't care I'm out"

I know that if you kill the Alpha of a group, the others become discouraged and the formation gets in disarray. It's interesting behavior.

Or maybe he is worried/surprised that the blow didn't even bother you, making you too much of a badass? Funny either way.

Had tons of interesting moments with the AI as well. Its unpredictability is great! Once, during COOP, we fought against a regular group and killed all except one. The last one was damaged with blood all over his body and thus ran away into the forest. Then 5-10 minutes later he just comes back to our base and keeps staring at us, running around a bit and refusing any fight.

Or a day ago while playing alone, I came across a leader but saw nobody with him. He stood silent and watched me before starting to make one of those horrifying screams. Moments later two others ran towards him and started to fight me.

I like playing anthropologist with these cannibals. Because it's not all the same.

There's groups with leaders and groups without. Night patrols and day patrols. Tribal Cannibals and Neuter cannibals and Starving cannibals. Small hunched over wild cannibals. Single tree climbing lookouts; groups with a mutant along beside...

And within each type of encounter, their behavior is varied and complex.

Again, hats off to the devs for some of the best AI ever.

POST: I wish I could encounter a cannibal that would be completelly non-agressive and just hang out with me. I would name him CHUD. (remember the movie C.H.U.D? Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller? No? I'm getting old.)

I remember it. And yea I'm old (compared to the gamer crowd). Honestly, terrible movie :steammocking:

Always thought the AI was so damn real acting. It really is the highlight of this game.

I expect them to becoem bones in my collection.

But generally yes they act not stupid repetitive (even if soemtimes a bit stupid). But sadly this leads em to save playing and killing them most of the time. I wish there were better ways to deal with them, like giving them some meat (or body parts) and they go off then. Would add another dimension of "way to get temporarily rid of them for sure except killing."

I think some of the coolest features about the cannibals are how if a group is getting crushed by you in a fight and there's wounded on the ground, sometimes the last member of a group will grab the wounded leader and drag him out of the fighting. Also, if you use drying racks they'll steal the food off of them, first day I bought the game a friend and I kept wondering why our food was disappearing. We caught 2 starving cannibals in the act in the middle of the night

Yup, enemy AI is one of the most interesting things about The Forest.
