They're watching you and sometimes they are hitting you once or twice just to test your reaction.
Mind you I don't know if that's just the AI going off to get more tribals but it feels like they just go "eh he doesn't care I'm out"
Or maybe he is worried/surprised that the blow didn't even bother you, making you too much of a badass? Funny either way.
Or a day ago while playing alone, I came across a leader but saw nobody with him. He stood silent and watched me before starting to make one of those horrifying screams. Moments later two others ran towards him and started to fight me.
There's groups with leaders and groups without. Night patrols and day patrols. Tribal Cannibals and Neuter cannibals and Starving cannibals. Small hunched over wild cannibals. Single tree climbing lookouts; groups with a mutant along beside...
And within each type of encounter, their behavior is varied and complex.
Again, hats off to the devs for some of the best AI ever.
POST: I wish I could encounter a cannibal that would be completelly non-agressive and just hang out with me. I would name him CHUD. (remember the movie C.H.U.D? Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller? No? I'm getting old.)
I remember it. And yea I'm old (compared to the gamer crowd). Honestly, terrible movie
Always thought the AI was so damn real acting. It really is the highlight of this game.
I expect them to becoem bones in my collection.
But generally yes they act not stupid repetitive (even if soemtimes a bit stupid). But sadly this leads em to save playing and killing them most of the time. I wish there were better ways to deal with them, like giving them some meat (or body parts) and they go off then. Would add another dimension of "way to get temporarily rid of them for sure except killing."
