Dropping Items?

I know that you can equip weapons and then drop them but are you able to drop items straight from the inventory?

No. Not unless it is Spoiled Meat. However, you can put items on racks and sodas, meds, etc. on shelves.

I'm not sure why you would want to drop anything, anything loose (like logs not in holders, sticks/rocks, unlooted meds etc) will despawn so you can't store things by dropping them in your base but have to use shelves and holders. If you want to share items in multiplayer you use the metal tray.
You don't save inventory space either because you can always carry a specific amount of everything.
