You could always wrap cloth around your weapon and light it on fire. Provides a lot more light and helps to kill the mutants.
Never use torches to attack, only as a lightsource.
The flare gun, like any fire based weapon are at their most affective when they can do a full burn cycle on an enemy. Constantly spamming flares into any monster type wihout a full burn cycle will only get you killed.

It's not necessary at all if you come prepared , it destroys the immersion and suspense when exploring caves
Super color grading is extremely bright with just the lighter.
Throw some molotovs and cook them. No point in melee combat when there's a giant monster type coming to destroy you.

Either the highest possible vantage point in that area of the cave, or run back to the first rope again from wich you descended. Hopefully they will follow you, making it possible to lob nades at them.
It depends really. Once i thought i was high enough and i got *ALMOST rekt by 2 charging cowmen. I still don't know how i made it out of that alive. And note this was playing with a controller, not high accuracy mouse.
And yes the Virginia's can jump attack you, but i have never seen one that could jump that high.
You can def solo the game, all it takes is some preparation when you go cave exploring. And a bit of luck sometimes.
