When exactly do Cannibals start to attack your base?

Once they figure out it's there they will occasionally attack the base. They will, however, never attack it when it's there. Also, heads up, a lil too much conflict with cannibals, you'll instantly notice you're getting swarmed by gigantic big ass mutant creatures, so.. Watch out. Also, red paint makes them bow down to you and think that you're a god, so.. Yea.

They will attack randomly as patrols pass and take notice. Your frequency of attack depends on are you on a patrol route, and have you deforested/built/fires/aggitated cannibals. I have had Hard file saves, with 7-8 cannibals running around day 1 on the beach. but then weeks with no contact whatsoever, due to the modesty of my camp and concealed location. No walls, only traps, and hunters shelter.


Red paint does not make them ALL worship you, a very small percentage of cannibals will react favorably, and no mutants.

Thank you, me and my friend made our base right next to their main camp with the red paint(We're off the on the shore though with walls blocking the only entrance) we go on daily genocides to stock up on bone and cloth and other resources from their camp, and we already saw two mutants while exploring. I call the one that looks like a spider kind of thing a cl it clincher, lol. Anyways thanks, we'll make sure you deforest more and kill more of them as well.

The cannibals and mutants attack your base exactly when you're not ready for them. My experience, anyway. lol

Depends where you build though.

If you make a base over the water, like say make a platform leading to the Yaht, you'll get next to nothing.

They may come by once in awhile but mostly it'll be quiet.

Well... when you're done cutting trees for your base, that is.

Being a lumberjack tends to bring em in.

Eeeer well no, they have to be within rendering distance, whatever that may be. If you're across the island you will not come back to see your base destroyed.

In my todo list it says to set up defenses, and im right next to a small camp i cleared out so what should i prepare for??

If you set up next to one of their villages, expect a good amount of resistance. All of their villages are patrolled regularly (some more than others though) so you will end up encountering enemies often and aggression will rise quickly, which will result in even more and stronger enemies even faster. The camps do not stay cleared out, the only places where enemy spawns are genuinely limited and can be entirely exterminated is in the caves (and there are some rare exceptions there to). Otherwise you could set up somewhere they can't really reach to avoid conflict, like any of the small islands on the outer edges of the map. If determined to build near a camp, you will either want to set up a good amount of traps quickly, or figure out the combat quickly because you will be engaging in it often (bow headshots are instakills on cannibals, but actually getting a headshot reliably can take some practice, the aiming is..."quirky", for melee, "strafe and stab". As long as you are constantly moving to the side of them, they often miss their attacks and you can strike back while they recover).

The difficulty also increases incrementally the longer the game goes on and after a certain time (20 days? can't remember) mutants and harder enemies will begin to spawn. The cannibals will also attack you continuously after you build a certain amount of structures on the map because they will see it as you moving in permanently. A major boss enemy will also spawn after a high number of days that would normally only trigger after you complete the story. The cannibals also revere the trees on the island so if they see you cutting them they will become more aggressive, also if you kill a female in their presence the same will happen. you can use red paint to make them passive up to a certain distance. They will also follow stumps to find you so either chop trees far from your base or break the stumps down. You have to leave the stumps though if you have Tree Regrow enabled as it requires them.

you can become their firend by not attacking them and not pissing them off if they attack u just block their punches after 3-4 days they will stop attacking u (this doesnt work on the monsters and the starving cannibal so feel free to kill those) they cannibals wont stop spawning or following u around they will also not treat u like a god they will just think that u r not a threat if the follow u around dont run cause they will attack u just walk if they keep following u dont panic theyre js curious to see what u r doing :)
