I have never used it myself, the large ferry type raft, i do know the smaller one is slow as molasses, and can get hung up on geometry when reefs are present... From what i understand the large one requires 2 drivers, and required communication and intent.
Feel free to yell at your kid, it builds character...
More or less you have to switch between both paddles all the time, because else all you do is drive arround in circles. Also you can widen the circle "a bit" by constantly pressing the opposite direction move key than your paddle moves to.
The direction you turn depends on which paddle you use!
The left paddle turns foward right and backwards left (like turning a stearing wheel to the right)
The right paddle does the opposite direction.
So it's going to the be like that to move a large raft alone...
1.) Enter left paddle, hit the left move key (raft slowly turns left), and the hit the LMB for about 2 secs (raft goes fast forward in a sharp right turn).
2.) Exit the paddle
3.) Go to the right paddle, hit the right move key, (raft slowly turns right), and the hit the LMB for about 2 secs (raft goes fast forward in a sharp left turn).
4.) Exit the paddle
5.) Back to step 1
However since you can cluster this thing with large logholders, meat dryers, turtle shells and camp fires you are well supplied for your trip :)
Small rafts also are sometimes painful. Never build more then one large log holder on it, as it's garanteed to turn over with 2 of them. Even if you manage to navigate carefully by micro clicks on the LMB, you are sure to bend over on exiting the paddle. They work very well with 2 small log holders though.
I play single player and I manage to steer the big raft by my self. You guys both hold in mouse 1 (I think that's the key) at the same time and you can move. If you want to turn left the guy on the left reverses (mouse 2) and the person on the right keeps holding forward (mouse 1). If you want to turn right the guy on the left has to start reversing.
It's really simple.
Both hold down to go forward.
If you want to turn left guy on the right must reverse.
If you want to trun right guy on the left must reverse.
If you make it so you both start by going forward then this is an easier way to cordinate, makes it so only 1 person has to do something to turn.
Both forward = Forward
Both backward = Backward
Left forward only = Right turn
Right foward only = Left turn
Left forward / Right backward = sharp right
Left backward / Right forward = sharp left
Earlier today, he said to me he was almost falling asleep, so, yeah, this could be the reason.
Today we tried again and everything went fine. Just like Shorty stated above, it indeed works like real life rafts.
It is still funny to read op tho.
Thanks for the comments guys!
