So anything that needs sticks and other stuff you have in your inventory will work, everything else not.
Generally speaking you might encounter more and more cannibals while surviving longer and they tend to get more aggressive, as you most probably cut down more trees and also kill more of them.
But it's not that the cannibals become harder to kill or anything, it's just more likely that they attack or are more alerted to your presence and therefor come by more often or send out more/bigger patrols.
Regarding cannibal aggression levels, the enemy ai resets each time you load a save, so you may have a few days to romp before they do a full scale assault. Noise levels, light levels at night, effigys, deforestation and engaging patrols are pretty good ways to gain their attentions.
