Just look at your combo list and figure out what links with your special moves

practice makes perfect. i just started playing too but most of these guys seem to have the same button inputs yet different combos that pop-out. id say this is arugably easier than most fighting games. try to find a character that you use best first.

Try the STAR Lab missions. It's how I got better with my favorite characters. If your friends are just button mashing then you should try using the mechanics of the game that they probably don't know about. Use the right trigger with a special move to do an enchanced version. If they waste their whole bar on an ultimate attack then perform a clash to regain your health, with no bar they can't prevent it. Use LB to hit them into the background or hit them through a stage change.

Button mashers are especially vulnerable to a correct use of guard. Hold your low guard when they are on the ground and when they jump guard up. Counter attack after the slow moves.

This strategy uses the fact that button mashers are less likely to input "overhead" moves (ground moves that must be guarded up and can hit you while crouched).

Commander Data's advice" is also pretty good. Combine both advice and you will likely start winning... against button mashers at least.

Also i am having trouble actually pressing the correct keys on the left, right, up and down pad as well as the joistick. For example when i hold back sometimes my chracter croches or jumps in stead of moving back. So i need to try push the buttons at the right abgle and it gets really anoying.

are you using an xbox controller? its not really good for precise inputs like fighting games, at least for me since im using one. i prefer using the D-pad instead of analog for fighting games since it gets jittery and will accidentally press jump or crouch, which is the same problem with xbox 360 controller because it tries to be innovative and try to combine a dpad+ analog stick.

that said, id still use a controller rather a keyboard for fighting games even if the controller is wonky.

About improving and winning, there's this guide that explains the base of all fighting games.

Don't know if people already talked to you about it, but it has the entire foundation for growth.

After that, there's the footsies hadbook. Really good.

Learn your special moves and use all your other ones. For example, if you're at the edge of the stage and you think there's a stage below hit, backwards+A (X on PS4) will do a transition.

To get good, just find a set of buttons that work for you. You don't even have to learn moves if you don't want to. Just know when to get out of the way of an attack and when to use certain attacks. Like, my settings are WASD for movement, IOP for attacks, K for power, E for interaction and Shift N' Capslock for the meter and stuff. I refine my buttons a lot, and use ones that feel more natural. So, just experiment with where your hands feel comfortable on your keyboard.
