This strategy uses the fact that button mashers are less likely to input "overhead" moves (ground moves that must be guarded up and can hit you while crouched).
Commander Data's advice" is also pretty good. Combine both advice and you will likely start winning... against button mashers at least.
are you using an xbox controller? its not really good for precise inputs like fighting games, at least for me since im using one. i prefer using the D-pad instead of analog for fighting games since it gets jittery and will accidentally press jump or crouch, which is the same problem with xbox 360 controller because it tries to be innovative and try to combine a dpad+ analog stick.
that said, id still use a controller rather a keyboard for fighting games even if the controller is wonky.
Ye I am using Xbox Controller - I dont really feel comfortable using the Dpad though
