Not many people still play multiplayer, but playing with someone from your friends list works perfectly yeah.

I tried playing online with one of my friends the other day and we couldn't connect. We will try again some time soon though because there might have been an issue with my internet connection

me and a friend did both ranked and unranked matches perfectly yesterday, give it a couple minutes to connect, or you can make a room. Don't worry if it doesn't connect instantly, it does take a bit. A room however allows you to confirm you will be playing together (not that anyone even still plays this game) but anyone can join the room.
