Nuclear Throne Speedrun Tournament -- All welcome to join

Hi everybody,

I've been hosting, participating in a lot of live split-screen races lately and am currently setting up to host a tournament for this game, because it seems like it would be a lot of fun to race and I want to get more people interested in speedrunning it.

Anyone with the game and streaming software (try OBS, it's free) can join, you don't even need a twitch account because I'll be receiving your streams directly. A mic is preferable but not necessary; I would like to have live racer commentary.

I'll probably give a small game prize to the winner, but it is mostly for fun at this point. If this thing turns out well enough, I'll be inclined to do another down the road.

We're starting February 7th, Saturday evening.

Rules:

1) It's a race to kill form 1 of the throne. Your time ends when after you enter the green warp. It doesn't matter if you kill 2nd form (and you shouldn't bother because of rule #2!)

2) You'll get 30 minutes to try to get the best time you can. It's a speedrun to beat the first form of the throne and enter the portal. This means that looping is a waste of time in this format (maybe I'll try a looping tournament some other time). You're better off restarting after you jump in the warp to try again. If you're on a run when the 30m timer runs out, you're allowed to finish so long as you're at least in 2-1.

3) If you fail to reach the throne, you'll be scored based on the best level you did clear. You might be able to move on to the next round depending on how many others fail to reach the throne.

4) It will be done in groups of 4, but groups are not for anything other than convenience. I will be comparing the entire round at once. Just because you won or lost in your group, it won't necessarily mean the same for the round.

5) Oasis skip is legal. No starting with golden weapons though. Y.V. & his revolver are okay. Your screenshake options mean nothing to me!

Set-up

You won't need much, honestly. It is a LIVE tournament so you will need to be able to broadcast to me, and record locally while you do so (just in case). This means you'll need streaming software. I recommend Open Broadcaster, it's free. The bandwidth I'd be asking for is 500 to 1000 kbps.

We have been doing these races with Skype and it is easy to organize on there, but we could use an alternative to that like mumble if you really hate Skype.

Those of you who want to stream to your own channel while participating (SRL style), that is absolutely possible. I can walk you through this process, but the gist of it is you need to run two instances of OBS at the same time. The stream to me will be very low bandwidth so it won't be horrible for you. The reason I want you to stream to my server instead of just grabbing you off of twitch is to remove the desync between each player, this will end up with about 4 seconds of delay instead of 30, and <1s of delay on your commentary.

I would participate if my Internet allowed me to do so (upload speed is incredibly awful that even 500kbps might be too much for it), but even then I couldn't because it is the one time I'm actually away from home!

But I'll try to watch when it happens. Love watching races like these.

I really want to say we could just use your local recording as I've done it many times before, but watching it live is a big part of the appeal in this case.

Yeah, that's kind of the big deal. I've seen a few races on your channel before and I love the appeal of live races, but my bandwidth is just that bad. 500 kbps is already shaky on my connection, so adding Skype or anything would be worse.

But I think the main problem this time is that I'm out of town that day and won't have access to a computer at all, so that doesn't help! Still, I can't wait to see these races if I can, and I'll be sure to keep up with this in the meantime.

Eh, you know what; I've been thinking about it and we're going to just let folks use whomever they like. Don't see any reason to restrict characters in retrospect.

You just need to set your software to send to a custom server and enter the appropriate info. I'll provide you that info when you're up and that should be all there is to it, barring some weird connection issue (we haven't run into this as of yet).

Hadn't thought about this but I'm not really big on a bunch of restrictions, especially while doing a for-fun event; countries won't be an issue unless your connection is poor, Age should be 16+ preferably but I won't enforce it.
